The other day I was driving my 1992 awd talon it was running fine. I came back out of the store about 10 minutes later and it would not start. I am waiting to get a logger to see if the ecu is throwing a code. the thing is it starts and sounds like shit for about 5 seconds. it will idle for the few seconds but then die. also if i give it gas the rpms will raise but then will die after that 5 seconds or so. I dont know if the check engine light is just on becasue the car just started and it does not have time to go off or if it is actually throwing a check engine light.

There are so many things that you can have wrong that will cause the same problems. You could have a t-belt that skipped a tooth, or a crank or cam angle sensor that's dying, but the best thing to do is what you already knew to do, grab a scanner or logger and start looking for signals that are missing or way off, that should lead you in the right direction. Dont forget to let us know what you find out. :dsm:

First off, check if you are getting fuel and spark. If you are then it could definately be timing related. Have you visually check the timing belt to see if it looks okay?

I checked timing belt about 500 miles ago it was in good condition. checking spark and fuel are two good and very obvious ideas that i really didnt think of im dumb. hopefully the logger will come through the mail soon i need to get the car running so i can get it back to the bay area to get the new engine put in. thanks for the help
