Ok Im tryin to buy a 1G tsi, the car will run fine. Then when you come to a stop it will die and is hard to start back up. I know the guys who are selling it, they are long time friends and they told me that the water pump went out and it overheated kinda bad.
After that though the car seems to be purring and runnin just fine. Thats untill you come to a stop and it just dies, then its hard to start it back up. I had a problem w/ my 90 Geo Storm kinda like this. My storm overheated and blew the head gasket internaly, sometimes after that it would run just fine but most of the time it ran like crap (rough idle and sputtering and stumbling. And after being on the freeway for a lil while if you took an off ramp and came to a stop it would die. Although it wasnt very hard to get it started but it seem similar to the TSi problem. So if theres any other problem that would cause the car to just die when you come to a stop please let me know or if you think that it is the hg please let me know too. Thanks -Chance

ISC sounds like it's going bad.
Tell me, does the car try and die when AC is turned on, or when the clutch is pushed in? Does it act differently than before on these cases?

If you can find a buddy with a logger, I'd suggest you hook it up and see what the logger says. You can look at your fuel trims (possibly a lean low fuel trim) and test the ICS while you're at it.
I'd also check your timing - mine reacted the same way when my timing was off. See www.vfaq.com for directions.

what is the isc? also how do these engines take to overheating?
is one overheat incident going to damage the car or do they do all right

N/M Probably a bad IAC (also known as ISC) Idle Air Control. It is located under the intake hose at the intake. Also can cause a bad idle surge, but have known them to cut out at stops too...

No engine likes overheating :p

Depends on the car, and depends on how bad the overheating was. Most cars will be okay after a short, accidental hot run. Just depends on the overall condition of the car, wear on the headgasket, etc. etc.

If by "under the intake hose" you mean "on the rear of the throttle body" you are correct. :thumb:

And change the spark plugs.

And do a boost leak test.

...Oh and check the ECU caps and the Coolant Temp Sensor while you're at it...

(we kid, we kid......)

Thanks a lot guys, oh and what i meant by how do these engine take to overheating is, I understand that it not good for any engine but what I am asking is it a huge problem if it overheated semi-bad for a real short period of time will that warp the head, also he is runnin 12 psi in it so that could help blow the hg but yeah afterthinking about it yeah kinda a dumb question but thanks agian and ill see what i can do.

also how much do the isc cost? wheres a good place to get one?

I got mine on ebay. Going rate is $30-$50 or so. The 91+ are easier to find, and all years after 1990 are interchageable. You could also look here on the Classifieds -- I've seen a couple for sale here and there.
Don't get it from the dealership if you can possibly avoid it. I think they are like $250 new.
