Hey guys, I have a problem with my Talon. A few months ago I noticed when you first boost the turbo it would blow a cloud of black smoke out, but no change in performance. Now when you slowly boost the turbo, to climb a hill especially, it pops, back fires, and blows black smoke. If you boost it hard then it doesnt do it. Also, when the car cools off and you first get in it you can raise the window down and hear a chattering sound from the drivers side thru 4th gear. Sounds like the turbo to me, the black smoke from leaking seals in the turbo. Is this what it sounds like? If so, Im going for a 16G, this t25 is gonna be gone! Can anyone tell me what I need to make the 16g work on my 2G? Thanks :talon: -

take off your intake pipe and see what kind of shaft play you got on that T25... IF you have any I'm probably going to say that it is your Turbo leaking... I just got a Big 16G for mine.. Just have to wait for it to get here...

If your turbo is leaking oil the smoke will be blue. Black smoke means fuel burning. Blue smoke means oil burning. Someone correct me if im wrong? :|

Nope your are correct... Oil is blue and fuel is black and water is white...

So it sounds like I have more than one problem! What could be making it run rich? Is there any way to correct that? I was getting my tires put on today and the mechanic started talking to me about my car. Come to find out he has delt with dsms alot in the past. He pulls out some stethescopes and listens to my turbo, he said there is alot of bearing noise on the wheel side. He let me listen to it and it was chattering alot. I havent had the chance to check the slack, but that should tell me alot.

I couldn't find a list of your mods.

Do you have a upgraded fuel system? A fuel pump especially? If so, are you using a AFPR with it?

If you are using anything higher then a 190, I would recommend a regulator. A 255 will overtake the stock regulator and you will run pig rich.

All that excess fuel is dumping in the exhaust after not getting burned in the combustion chamber. It then ignites in the exhaust and causes a a nice marshmellow cookin flame to shoot out the muffler and a loud backfire.

I would take off your intake and check for shaftplay on the turbo. Wiggle the shaft back and forth and in a circular motion the best you can to check for movement.

Is the turbo making a loud whistling sound, that is pretty much a sign that it is at the end of it's days.

Haha, thats funny you asked. I don't even know my own mods! I bought this car from a guy that bought it from a guy, you know the story. The guy I bought it from just told me[it has larger injectors.] He didnt even know what size! When I bought it it had holes drilled in the interior for all the guages he had in it that he yanked out before he sold it. I pretty much bought a exraced beater car!haha. Im sure the guy had some sort of regulator inside the car. I didnt put any guages back in the car cause I seen where the car come from and I just wanted a daily driver. I need to see about the injectors and fuel pump, but I dont think that is my problem. The car has run excellent for 1 year with nothing like this happening. Then all of a sudden I have this problem, its funny too cause as long as your boosting higher it has no problem, just when your easing into the turbo, especially up hills, it starts jerking and blows some black smoke[which is fuel smoke]. I should be posting this in the newbe section cause Im new at this.

if he went snatching things out then he may have snatched out a SAFC. Whenever you just take it out it makes the car run kinda crappy. I had to drive all day yesterday without one (See Here) and it was doing all kinds of poppin and black smoke. It seemed to be running extremely rich at idle but once i boosted it was fine.

If you do have bigger injectors and a better pump with no way to control them (SAFC he took out) then the ECU thinks the bigger injectors are the same size as the stock ones. Therefor you get alot of extra fuel which the ECU is not aware of :thumbdown

Hope you dont mind me asking but what in the world is a SAFC? I failed DSM 101.

Sorry about your car man, theres nothing worse than a thief! Where I live we don't seem to have much problems with thiefs. Population 1,500! You always gotta keep on your toes though cause that doesnt mean it won't happen!

Super air flow converter, Super air fuel controller.

In a nutshell it just lets you allows you to control the amount of fuel being used.

Quote from Apexi:

The second-generation S-AFC is a fuel computer that adjusts fuel/air ratio by modifying the air-flow meter/MAP sensor signal. The S-AFC features a user-definable, eight-point, adjustable fuel curve that can be set in 500 RPM increments. The range of fuel adjustment is +/- 50% at each of the user-defined setting points. On hot-wire vehicles, the Deceleration Air Flow Correction function is capable of curing the erratic idle and stall problems associated with open-atmosphere blow-off valves on hot-wire air-flow meter systems. The S-AFC is capable of monitoring and replaying the following data channels in Numerical, Analog Meter and Graph displays: Intake Manifold Vacuum/Boost Pressure, Air Flow Capacity, Intake Manifold Pressure, Karmann Frequency, Engine RPM, Throttle Position, and Air Flow Correction %.

Due to the complexity of this product, A'PEX recommends having the S-AFC and other A'PEX electronics installed and tuned by authorized A'PEX Power Excel Shops.

Get yourself an SAFC and someone to tune it. That will fix your rich condition and smoking. For the turbo, if the compressor wheel is hitting the housing then you might need to get it rebalanced or rebuilt. But you can always do what I did when my stock turbo went, bought a bigger one

Exactly! Bigger is better!

got the same thing today, was crusing down hill though, doing a 4th gear pull, (my front o2 sensor is dead hense the check engine light, or dieing) and as i was at about 10 psi (set for 15) the car jerked and popped black smoke out of the exhaust, i instantly put the clutch in thinking wtf just happened. as i shifted back into fourth and tried again... no black smoke... curious, was this a backfire? or is my turbo goin also (t25) i wouldent doubt it, i have an FP red on the way anyway and a new 6 bolt about to be built and tuned with dsmlink, BUT just curious what that could be, im most likely running way rich too. but this is the FIRST time i have ever had a problem (and yes i have a 255HP but stock injectors and no fule regulation at the moment)
