the UPDATE

Timing belt is broke...so the head is messed up...i have a good mechanic he charges alot but i know hes good...he's got a 92 300zx that puts out 1204hp i saw that on the dyno today..and he works on my dads 97 supra...so i trust him with imports....the cost however isnt so good... hes going to rebuild the head new water pump new timing belt for 1200.00 with a 6 month labor and 1 year parts warranty...now i dont have 1200.00 to spend like that so i told him how much he'll give me for my wrecked 97 spyder gs in my garage thats taking so much space...he said off top $200 but then he saw the pictures of the engine he said the engine is still good so he said $600 but he'll have to see the body damage...so if i can get $600 off of $1200 i might go ahead and let him do it....

is 1200 too much?
i went to 3 other shops and they said if he'll do it for 1200 let him do it

How bad is the Spyder GS in the garage ? I'm sure it's worth more than $600 dollars.

A wrecked GS could get you more than 600 dollars by merely parting it out. IMO 1200 is on the high side of getting all of the work done. Of course, I do all the work myself, so that is a huge factor also. My price breakdown was as this:

Completely rebuilt head - 350 (hot tanked, disassembled, reassembled, milled)
Timing belt components - 200
misc. costs - 100

so there you have it, a lot of reading, checking and double checking, I did my entire head rebuild + tbelt for less than 700.

I wouldnt let that guy touch my money. You could buy a new rebuilt 420a and just plop it in for that amount of cash. You can buy a new water pump at nappa for $43.19 and the timing belt is $66.99 (timing kit $140). And you can have the head fully rebuilt at a mitsu dealer for 800, and thats mostly for work. If i where you, I would try to do some of the work. It would save several hours of pay, and at $60+ an hour, it counts.

How do you think he was able to afford all the HP under the hood?

I wouldn't let him touch my car, if he's going to charge that much. But fortunately, I do all my own work.

$600 dollars for a wrecked 97 Spyder GS, if you part that thing out you'd get way more than that.

I say you get far far away from that shop and find another one.

Hmm, that is kinda expensive, sounds like mostly labor. Neccesary parts should be around $350-550, depending on where you buy it from. I would think the 97 spyder be worth much more then that if you part it out yourself..

1200 is a lot of cash. It could go a lot further if you had a way to do the work yourself. You can almost buy a JDM engine for that. I picked mine up for 1450. Also, what kind of head work is going to be done? Will it be an upgrade?

As for the spyder. If you really have to use it as collateral. Offer it for the whole job not just 600. Unless it is unfixable, it has to be worth more than 600.
