This is recommended, however not 100% necessary. I installed a stock (rebuilt) 7 bolt head on a 6 bolt block using 6 bolt ARP head studs with no clearance issues.

I attempted to do this also, but a couple of the studs (6 bolt) wouldn't fit, most of them did however.

It should definitely be done. One of the headstuds holes in the head is used to transfer oil from the block to the head. If this hole is too tight it can cause oiling issues in the head.

You need to do this if you are bolting a 7bolt head that ran 11mm studs/bolts on a 1g 6bolt block with 12mm studs/bolts
