if you have upgraded cam gears can you have them without the cover on and still drive with it off or will anything happen?

WOW! I'm 2wanting a clear cover BAD now, those things look pimp. But where do i find a timing belt that color coordinates with my engine bay? I've seen the blue ones, even that would be fine for my setup. If i get the clear cover it looks like i'll have to get colorfull gears as well
