Hi There, It's my first post :p

I'm a newbee :D I own a 2002 civic and want to get a GST G2 (97-99) for I was impressed by its proformace from riding in my brothers car which he just bought, but ... Please answer my questions:

Is the GST G2 (97-99) relaibale enough?

No offence, but Honda's are well known for thier realiabilty.

What kind of problems might I face when buying one (In genral)? What are the stuff that I should be looking into closely before buying?

If I keep it stock, will I face problems or problems start to occur when you start playing with its components = mods? (That's what's happening to my brother now :( )

Note that I won't be doing any mods for a while. I also want to buy a stock one and do the mods later.

Is it expeisnve to own a GST? I'm worried if I trade-in my civic for a GST, I'll face a lot for peoblems with the car and end up paying a whole lot more than if I sticked to my civic.

I totally fell in love with the GST and really dieing to own one for its power, its looks, ... I appreciate your replyes :thumb:

Peace out,
CraZy D

VERY heavily discussed topic...are DSM's reliable? well it really depends on who you ask. with the right maintainence and non-carelessness with the car you will enjoy it. sure it will cost more in maintainence, than a honda possibly could, problems occuring more rapidly with mods is another topic of discussion, there have been people that havent done a single mod to their car and have gotten CRANKWALK!! and there are people who have done too many mods to count that havent had a speck of trouble.

i love my GST so far, and i havent had any problems as of yet...if you really want to study before you make a decision i suggest you goto www.vfaq.com, and look at everything that has to do with these cars.

searching is the best tool to answer your questions, i know it is easier to ask the question outright, but that is how people make mean replies that include only SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH!!

BOTTOM LINE: you are going to pay for your DSM in the long run, more than you would for a honda, IMHO, if you love your car, like i do, then it wont matter!!

sorry for the long post

AJ

boost a honda and you'll get about the same reliabilty as a dsm. turbo cars will always need more maintenace. trust me since you own the 02 civic you don't even know what torque is...even a stock gs-t is a big step ahead. just my $.02....I got rid of my slow ass 00 civc ex and never looked back.

i have had my 2G for over a year and i have had only 2 problems:
1. My convertible motor broke Mitsu gave me a new one for $50 (covered under warrenty)
2. My door handle broke:rolleyes:

I believe its all about TLC i give my car about a good 1-1 1/2 minutes starting and shutting down. Also i dont go revving the hell out of it I shift and 3000-3500 RPM. I do routine oil changes and maintance.

75,000 trouble-free miles so far for my 98 GS-T.

Stock rotors tend to warp when you sneeze nearby. Just replace em with something better when they go, or you'll end up replacing em again and again and...

Lets make sure you do understand ONE THING, Mitsubishi Eclipses/Eagle Talons/Plymouth Lasers MUST BE BABIED. This means GOOD CARE. If you aren't going to take the time to switch timing belts every 60K, do oil changes 3,000 to 6,000 miles (6 if on synthetic), check tranny fluid, check coolant fluid, etc. etc. all the basic maintance required...THEN DONT BUY it.

In terms of maintance, FWD tends to require less since there is less pressure being put on the suspension components off of launches.

I don't think crankwalk is as big of a issue that this site makes it out to be.

Keep in mind also, turbo cars are much more complex than your all motor vehicles..this means it requires more care. If taken care of I think a DSM can be a reliable daily driver.

Another big deal about our cars is the T-belt or timing belt. If it breaks bye-bye valves and posibly other things. They last about 30000 miles so be sure to ask if it has been changed if not make them come down on price and get it fixed ASAP. This is one of the big problems and one the tends to point that our cars are not reliable. Also if it's turbo make sure the oil has been changed at leat every 3,000 miles. Since GST's are turbos there will be more to keep up on them. Also if you get a GST get rid of the T-25 turbo you will be glad you did. Even on stock boost it will respond a lot better and will still be a good daily driver.

Thank you all for your replies .. I really appreciate it ..

My old man keeps telling me to buy an Integra GSR! How can I convince him that the GST is better? Or is he right?!

What year GSR? I hate the models with the little circle headlights, but (I think) they're the ones with the higher hp motor.. (195?). They're pretty quick though, and look good stock. The GST would be as quick stock and can be made to be pretty damn fast for not a whole lot of cash, whereas the GSR would take a big chunk to go turbo. I think the GST's look better too... *shrugs*

I love my eclipse although its been down for half the time I owned it, but I blame it on the previous owner, probably didn't know how to take care of it, but it runs fine now with all the mods I have on it.......

He's looking to trade in my car for a 2000 GSR (170HP)!!! He says that Acuras live longer and cause less trouble!= I wish he can understand, or maybe I'm just too eager .. I'm lost you guys! i DON'T know what to do.

I need a fast car which in the same time is a hatchback (For my sound system :thumb: ) but at the same time to be relaible so that my folks would agree ..

I appreciate all your posts .. Keep it up ;)

Once u start modding any car its not going to be reliable. especially a dsm.

Then Keep it? Do you want a reliable car or a Fast, fun car. dont say both because IMO you cant.

from my personal experience, the first two months or so will just be fixing the car up and finding problems and fixing it. i would consider buying a compression tester and doing a compression test when you go check a car out.

You wont be able to keep it stock :) you'll always want more and more mods and speed. As you start modding you are likely to run into problems but thats just the way it is.

You want to buy 2 DSM's? Hope you have time and money to maintain them.

Insurance is going to be a bit more. If you start modding it, which you will, it will cost money and its easy to run into problems that will cost money to be fixed. IMO- after driving a turbo car i wouldnt ever go back to N/A. its all worth it.

You'll love it. I would really consider buying an AWD though. Thats the biggest mistake i made when i got mine. even then, its still the funnest car ive ever driven.
