It allows follows the path of least resistance. So there must have been a small crack there along with your wire for that cylinder having out of spec high resistance.
Basically it was easier for current to flow through that hole(or what may have been a very tiny crack to begin with) to get to ground than it was to go through the wire and make the jump from cathode to anode on the plug. Its that simple.

Oh okay, thanks for the reply, i havent been able to test it yet, but what do you think the chances are that that coil is no good?
