Hey ya'll,

I just recently bought a 1G talon

20g turbo, HKS 272 Cams, Turbo back exhaust, Shep tranny, ACT clutch

well, I'm the kinda guy that is a perfectionist when it comes to cars.

The wiring harness in this car was a complete mess, so I pulled the engine out so it would be easier to rewire the car. And also, I wanted to retorque bolts to factory specs and go through the engine

While I have the engine out I'm wanting to do a budget build

I was thinking, My "1G big rods" mated with the EVO 8-9 or 2G pistons.

does that sound like a good budget build for around 400 HP?

let me know what you think,

Thanks,
John

That would be perfect. Machining on the rods can be expensive so dont get ripped off. I had my 2g pistons mounted for $75 which is about right. Ive heard shops trying to charge $150 for the machining and at that point you might as well get some forged pistons.

But if it was me I wouldnt build the motor if it works. If compression is good I would say stick with it till you need to build it. You will be surprised how much power and how long a stocker will last. My brother has been on his same 6 bolt for about 8 years making near 400whp. It may have been built beofre he picked it up.

Yeah, it does feel weird building an engine that works. But I thought since it's already out I might as well at least do a budget build...plus the cylinders do look like they could use a hone...

BTW around what WHP has the "big rod" and Evo 8-9 or 2g piston combo been proven to support reliably? I've tried searching and seen as much as in the low 500 whp range...that seems a little high...but I'm not sure...

When I was doing my build on my 1g last year, I has some evo 9 piston and rods. My machine shop was unable to locate new rings. Even through Mitsubishi. So locate all the parts first.

wasnt thinking in the above post, I'm assuming they were used LOL

what I was really meaning to say is where can you buy NEW piston rings for the 2g pistons?

thanks,
John
