Broken bolts in head

Not really a DSM question... but its on my DSM and I'm registered here so here I am.

I was just installing a new header. Two of the studs that go through the manifold into the head, both on the far passenger's side snapped off.

Any ideas on how to get them out? Aluminum heads suck...

I've got a bad vac leak on my GTP, no manifold on the DSM now, and I have to go to work tomorrow. I need to get one or the other fixed ASAP...

drill a a small hole in the center of the stud and use an easy out simple fix and if u slip drill it out the next size up and retap the hole

I would get the heli coil kits i have always had good luck with them. The easy outs not so much because if the easy out breaks off in the hole you drilled then you will never get the broken stud out. The easy outs are a really hard metal that you can not drill out.

I would also go with a helicoil kit. I had this happen to me and after playing with options I decided to simple drill it out carefully and retap just to make sure I would avoid problems down the road. Enough you need the car up and running quick, make sure and take the extra time and do it right...speaking from experience!

I also have had this problem. I used a Snap-On Screw extractor kit that I have, they are the stubby extractors the GOOD ONES they dont break! ( the number for the kit is REX10B) I used the 5/32 extractor, your also going to want a center punch. This will make sure that the hole you drill is straight! This will keep the drill from wanting to move around on you. When you drill go slow... Also its not a bad Idea to get a heli-coil kit in case things go wrong. Remember take it nice and slow.

Before I checked this I tried an easy out and it snapped in one of the studs.

I used a thing like 95_pimpDSM said in the other one, same thing but made by Craftsman. It pulled the other one out no problem.

I'm picking up a set of left handed drill bits in a little while. I'm hoping there's enough room to get on the side of the easy out, and that I can drill in reverse until it binds up, and keep repeating until it comes out. Thats my only other idea on that one.

craftsmans ok, there ratchets have been taking a crap on me lately.

I broke a craftsman easy out and a snap on when trying to pull my lower control arm. Bolt problems are BS, but heat has really helped me out since then. Try using some MAP gas before you back the bolt out.

Helped me a ton. Makes things hot of course, but doing it correctly makes things 100 times easier.

Same thing happened on my Sentra. I had to take the head to a shop to have them drip, tap and install a heillie coil.

drill a little hole in it. heat it up really good the get some air in can turn the can upside down where liquid will come out spray on on bolt. take the easy out to bolt and should come right out .
