Bought a new TSi, did I just totally get screwed?

So guys. I know I've posted a few times already, so, I'm trying to stop honestly. I am just trying to keep this as anonymous as possible so I am not pointing fingers at anyone.

However, I am wondering if I totally got screwed. I think I did.

So, I had no daily driver. My GST wasn't running well, and my SRT4 is in the middle of being sold. I also have no cash on hand. I needed a daily driver ASAP, and I found a local guy on the local forums asking $5,000 for his automatic TSi. It only had 78K miles, and was a one owner car. I was like, not bad! And I was asking $4,600 for my Eclipse so I figured, maybe he'll trade? So, I offered to trade, and told him what my car had. Keep in mind, my car has $12,000 in parts alone and his is bone stock. He said, "Sure, I'll do it." We talked about the details and stuff, but he agreed. I explained exactly what I had done to the car and what it needed to be a good running car. I also explained that I didn't have the time to make it so. I also had no money. Anyway, so....

So, he brings the car down and I am inside the gas station where we're meeting. He texts "I am here." So I told him I'd be a minute. I came outside and he was at his other Talon with his friend and the Talon he was trading me was parked somewhere else. I got to it and it was still running. Thought it was a little odd, but whatever.

Anyway, I drove it, and it drove okay but it wasn't nearly as nice as my GST. But being desperate, I figured it was fine because it ran well. The tape deck was screwed up and the check engine light was on, plus he said the tire was leaking a little. I thought, no biggie, when I get paid in 2 weeks, new tires, new stereo, and I'll clear the code by getting a new O2 sensor (which was the problem). I traded, signed the papers, and off we went. Well, I started the Talon and GRRRIIIINNNDDDD and then it fired up. Flywheel (or flexplate) is totally screwed up (which he didn't tell me) and I'm going to be out $1,000 cause I have to have the trans pulled. Also, it didn't pull up one code for the O2 sensor (I trusted his word), it pulled up three! And the tire wasn't slowly leaking, it lost all it's air in one day and that tire is toast. It barely holds any air, so I have to get a replacement set of tires NOW just to drive (cause they're all the same tires), and ready to crap out.

I know, shame on me. I really should have checked everything closely, so, I've learned my lesson. But, come on! Doesn't it sound like he knew the car was totally f'ed up? And not only that, it's maybe getting 18 mpg right now on the f'ing freeway, which he swore it was getting great gas mileage. I know I was dumb to go for the trade, but I think he took advantage of me for a few bucks.

What do you guys think?

Starter's brand new from the dealer with receipts. Okay, I guess he just said the starter was new, which I am beginning to think is a bunch of bu******

Yeah, I am willing to accept that I got shafted. I just can't believe what kind of jacka$$ the guy was after I explained my situation to him. "Nope, I don't care!! Just gimme the car and I'll screw you over!"

yep you got the shaft

did you pull the inspection plate to see if the ring gear was damaged?

I just took it to my mechanic (very skilled and I am close friends with him) today (should've done that before), and he just shook his head and said "Dude, just redo the whole f***ing flexplate, starter and go the whole nine yards, this car is f***ed."

I was really hoping to hear that "Well, it's got 78K miles, it's still worth the trade." I guess not....LOL.

Maybe I should go get me another car on a loan or something eh? I think this thing is going to be in the shop for a while.

I've got two other CEL codes, P0173 and P0 something...dang it that I have to resolve before it's registerable. He didn't tell me anything else was wrong, just that, "It needs a rear O2 sensor". It needs more than that. And, I forgot to mention the A/T trans temp light is on now.

And, I still gotta pull the trans though, and I am having my shop do it. It's 7-8 hours in mechanic's labor, and (okay fine, it's not $1,000), but I told him I needed a daily driver. This car wont start anymore. I am out a daily driver, and am in a worse position now because the car I was selling to pay my bills (SRT-4) is now what I have to drive. It'll be sold Tuesday, and I'll have nothing until I buy another car. But I have no car cause the Talon is F'ed. It's really more annoying than anything, and I'll be out $500 to get the work done to fix it. That wasn't in the deal.. I bought it as a good running problem free car minus the O2 sensor. Well, that wasn't all, was it?

It ain't a POS, and I think the car is pretty dang nice. But, the fact that he sold/traded it to me as a perfectly fine running car pisses me off.

Lol, I've got a full time job and am a full time student at the same time. Didn't say I couldn't do it, just sayin' I don't have the time. I have the shop that my dealership I work at can use to fix it, which is where I am going but....it still costs me $40/hr in shop labor. Point is, I shouldn't have to do this in the first place!

Haha, should've traded for that Accord...

wow boned man. this happened with my talon. Within two weeks the clutch snapped in half and ruined my flywheel.......guy forgot to put 4....i kid you not 4 bolts back in the trans.

We live we learn. I'm a full time student, i work full time, and i wrench on my talon, other cars as a side job, have two cats and a dog. And still time for halo 3 online. haha

Uh....the trans is held in by exactly 4 bolts. Wanna explain how he pulled that one off? Or you want us to believe that there were ZERO bolts holding the trans in.

Desperation calls man. And my full time job isn't 40 hours a week, it's 70. So, I am never even f'ing home.

I didn't put 12K into the car, the previous owner did. And besides, the economy these days is killing me. I put my GST for sale for $3500 even, and no one even came to look at it. This economy totally sucks...

Well, I am going to have to suck it up and spend another $500 and get the damn Talon on the road. The rest of the car is fine, minus the lousy 18 mpg, but I guess that's cause of the CEL issues. Oh yeah, did I mention this car has a million CEL's and an A/T temp light flashing at me? N/M, I'm just venting...

i would like to see pictures of what was traded for what, you did #### up and list or say what you had done to your car, and i am sure he knew what he was getting, i bet he never felt sorry, i know i didnt when i stiffed a guy trading my firebird for my current dsm, hey his problem now not mine, see how easy it is.

Should have been more clear....they were in. But by no means tightened down. The damn thing was pretty much hanging by a thread. Gave me a reason to get dirty and install new parts though. :hellyeah:

I feel you on the full time being more then 40 man. No i don't work 70. But i do pull 50 a week. Couple that with all the cars i work on in my make shift garage (was a dumb idea....but i do make good money) i feel like dying by the end of the week haha.

Just keep on keeping on.

above @ ilco87.... so what? You like screwing people over? I mean, there are those that are really dumb yes, I know. But there's a difference between letting someone do something dumb, and deceiving them.

I knew I was trading down, don't get me wrong. I'm being specific about that, I knew what my car was, and I knew what his was. I already knew that, I am not a newbie when it comes to buying and selling. I just needed a daily driver and he knew that. That's all. I just needed something that would run and get me by for the next couple months until I got my finances in order. He also knew his car wouldn't run for s*** for more than a week. That's why it pisses me off. Cause, I found out the hard way because he purposely left out the details of the other repairs it needed and I am out a car. He knew what it needed, and left out the details of "Oh, it might not start next week (and it didn't)." Also, he conveniently left out the part of "I'm going to paint it for you" in the contract. Freaking dirtbag. But I wont even go there.

And yeah, life goes on. Whatever. Just makes me shake my head at what people will do to get on top ya know. I thought honesty and ethics and stuff like that were valued or something in America. LOL.

no i dont like screwing people over, but when you have been stiffed over a couple times you learn theirs no honesty and dont trust anyone.

Thats not cool. Sorry man. I honestly thought us dsm guys and girls knew about our cars. Some of the Noobs are still learning, but all in due time. Anyways, I had assumed that everyone on here would tell it to you straight and wouldn't sugar coat it. Unfortunately, there are ppl out there like that. Sad, Really Sad. Sounds like you should have kept the gst.

All I gotta say is, One definitely does not equal two in your case.... You've been had.....

You work at a dealership and have full access to toss the car on the hoist, yet you dont. You don't even shut the car off and start it again. To me it seems like you screwed yourself over, you had the full opportunity to turn the key off. And the job wont be all that expensive. If you noticed these problems you could of tried to get him to add money ontop for atleast 50% of the repairs.

What he did wasn't very nice, but u were already suspicious when he showed up in a different car. It seems like you rushed into it and overlooked alot.

so did you contact this person about your problems after the trade? if so what did he/she say to you??

"You left your garage door opener...might wanna come get it."

That's all.

I know I totally rushed into it, and it's not like I traded for a Daewoo. I just ended up being $500 behind where I wanted. The Talon was probably worth $3,700 when it runs fine cause of the mileage and the fact that it's an AWD TSi, but it's broken now..

And I had to drive an hour to meet him, so I didn't have access at my shop. It was an inpulse decision, and I know that. I think you said it well richardc.
