I currently have a 98 Gs eclipse.. Stock motor is the 420a... If I was to boost this motor is it subject to crank walk? Is there anything i should be aware of before doing this upgrade?

Haha crankwalk is only for 7-bolt 4g63t's. You should probably look into Hahn Racecraft's turbo kits.

Actually, both 6 and 7 bolts can walk. We only seem to hear about the 7 bolts, however, since they make up the vast majority of those motors that have. However you slice it, crankwalk is the most overused diagnosis and less likely to happen than most people think.

Cheers,

Andy

I considered this option when I had my 95 GS and while it was entertaining for a while, I went in a different direction. If you decide that you really want to turbo the car, take some time to determine your goals and see if this will help get you there. Hahn Racecraft is well known for making high quality kits for the 420A and you can find more information here:

In order to ensure that your motor is suitable for turbocharging, it would be a great idea to run a compression test and verify that all of your regular maintenance is done. A turbo will put additional stress on a motor that's tired so please take the time to go through the fuel system and also replace the timing belt/water pump and idlers if necessary. Also make sure that your clutch is healthy since you'll be putting much more power to the pavement.

Other than that, consider your cost options and if the car and your wallet are up to the task, make the best decision for you. Most importantly, don't be persuaded by people who tell you to buy a turbo in the first place. If this is what you want and you have the means, then have at it.

Hope that helps,

Andy

P.S. Crankwalk should be considered as highly unlikely on the 420A, but you can have crankshaft endplay measured if it'll put your mind at ease.

As Andy mentioned, theoretically, crankwalk can happen on ANY motor (well.... not a rotary, obviously) but certain motors get it more often than others. As long as your 420a is in good condition to begin with, I'm sure you'll find turbocharging it a very viable option if you choose that route, and crankwalk shouldn't be an issue at all.
