Blew my trans yesterday

So I was driving around yesterday and I saw my friend with a stage 2 WRX pull up next to me. He down shifted and wanted to race so I threw it in 1st at about 10 mph and we started going, I was hanging neck and neck with him (DSM power FTW) redlined 1st, redlined 2nd, not knowing my own strength I kind of slammed 3rd pretty hard and the shifter went to 3rd but the gear wasn't engaged so I went to 4th. 4th worked and I went for 5th but it was locked out... I kept it in 4th, pulled over, put it in neutral and let the clutch out but it was still as if a gear was engaged. I figured I just slipped a cable so I pulled over, low and behold a cotter pin on the shift lever broke off and my cable was almost off the lever. I fixed that and fired it back up. The damage had already been done... no matter what gear I put it in its as if its stuck in 4th unless I try reverse then it's just like a park gear it just kills the motor. I'm thinking I actually did slip a cable and had I not gone to 4th everything would have been fine? But shifting into 4th broke or bent a shifter cable.
The trans had 155,xxx miles and bad 1, 2, 3, and 4 synchros so I don't feel too bad but it sucks

Sounds like you may have broken a shift rail. I broke mine when I shifted hard into 3rd, and the car was halfway locked into 2 gears.

On the late 92-99 cars if it does that you broke the rail, in the 90-92 units you broke the shift fork. The bottom of the fork breaks at the pin, so you can move the fork into 4th, but not back out from there. Here is a pic of the forks. On the bottom is the 1G 3/4 fork. Bottom left is a broke one.
