Big 16G just installed, can't boost! And yes, I searched...

I just got done installing a Big 16G in my 2G with a 6 bolt swap. I used to have a 20G but wanted a more streetable turbo. I have an external wastegate. I hooked everything up that same. The only difference was that the 20G had a nipple on the outlet of the turbo. The 16G doesn't. So I installed one on my J pipe near the outlet. The vehicle idles perfect and runs smooth. But I can not boost! As soon as I start, the vehicle jerks and bucks. Will not boost past 5psi. The 20G had the internal wastegate welded shut. I did not do that on the new one. I just didn't hook up that vacuum line to the actuator.

What is the possible problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Vehicle has been down for 2 months! Want it back on the road!

I don't think the actuator is your immediate problem. It should at least stay shut until like 15psi or so. The problem is more likely tuning. you might have to add or remove fuel as the turbo is spooling.

Do you think I am getting too much fuel? It was "tuned" for a 20G. How would I back that off? I have a DSMLink system but not a clue how to use it! :D

Tested for boost leaks yet?

The tune might not be 100% perfect but its going to be pretty close. Fuel is added based on the airflow through the maf sensor. So with your 16g it will see less airflow, adding less fuel. Did you check all you connections, maybe you forgot to plug in the maf connector?

I have check all the connections and tested for boost leaks. Nothing I have found so far. Had a check engine light come on but that was for the rear 02 sensor which is tied up under the car since I have had it. Cleared it and ran it again. Still same thing. I am able to build more boost in 5th gear, nearly 13. But only 5 in 1st, almost 10 in second and all other gears. Any other ideas?! Still bucks and stutters. I have DSMLink and did a capture. Everything is steady at normal 55 mph, but bounces when the boost comes on. Would a clogged vacuum line do this sort of thing? Bad Map sensor?

I did a capture with the DSMlink and when the boost comes on, my A/F will drop suddenly, the fuel % will increase at the same time. Then, the A/F will jump to 20 and the fuel % will drop to 0.0%. Any ideas with this new information?

Need more info about how you have the vacuum lines hooked up. Where do you have the J-pipe hose going to (the one you added the nipple for)? And what are you using for a boost controller?

I have an HKS electronic boost controller. Hooked up just the same as on the 20G. One feed between the throttlebody and engine. One from the manifold side of the external wastegate to the controller. The last one from the outside of the external to the controller, with a T fitting to the nipple on the J pipe. Checked the diagram with the HKS controller and everything is how it should be.

The car is acting the same as it did when I didn't have the last vacuum line hooked up to the J pipe. Any ideas? I have reset the controller but can not reset it fully since I can't pull boost to show it where it is at. Can I just disconnect the lines to see if the turbo will just boost fully, being careful not over boost it?!

Any DMSlink experts?! I was just reading on their website that they say that if the battery is disconnected (or died in my case) that the ECU will reset the WOT response and fuel settings if you have larger injectors. The main settings will stay. So that will get my vehicle running like it is but under boost it might cause it to loose power or cut out the fuel feed. Anyone know how to get a temporary setting just to see if that is the cause?

You can download the users guide from the DSM Link downloads page. All info about setup and tuning is in the guide. The eprom is burned to the specifications of the original owners requested default settings. I have the 1G link, and it works perfect.

Think I figured out the problem! I was reading on DSMLink that if you lose power to your ECM for a while, then the ECU will adjust back to stock settings. So I went into an older data log, transferred the fuel trim and timing settings, and uploaded them into the ECM. Test drove and...........WE HAVE BOOST! Just have to do the fine tuning now. But at least we are boosting once again. Thanks to all that put some input in.

just so you know they're making an upgrade so we won't have to deal with that. I had to make a 10 minute drive on stock fuel trims and it was awful.

Yeah, they're website has been saying they'll have the memory chip out for the 2G for a long time now. It has been about 10 months since I first visited their site, and they haven't made a 2G memory board in that time. How hard could it be? They already have one for the 1G... the two EPROMs can't be that different.

Do yourself a favor and perform a real leak test, you might be surprised at the results.

I did do a leak test and found my J pipe with a slight leak to the intercooler piping. That was all. Seems to all be with the DSMlink programming. Should hopefully have that worked out shortly! Thanks for the help
