hey guys,

i'm new to the forums so i guess i better introduce myself. my name is chris. i live in irvine, ca and go to UCI where i'm currently in my 3rd year studying criminal justice. i dont have a DSM yet, but i've always wanted one and am thinking about getting a GSX.

i was wondering, what is the best year GSX? is it worth getting the GSX over the GST? i've driven my friend's stock '95 GST and the turbo doesn't seem to have much power even when fully spooled. is that a common problem in the eclipse? and is there a place on this site that i can search cars for sale by region? or anywhere that i can post a "wanted" thread for a GSX? thanks guys and i hope to become a full member with an actual DSM soon!!

Pick up an early 92 GSX or TSI. 6 bolt engine with 4 bolt rear. 14b turbo has more potential than the 2G T25 turbo.

And, yes, AWD is definitely more fun to drive than FWD. If you plan on keeping it close to stock then front wheel is not terrible, but for hard play or big power all wheel is much more fun.

Also, there is a classifieds section.

Like said, if you want cheap speed, pick up a GSX or talon awd with the 6-bolt engine and 4-bolt rear in it. If you want better looks, and the same potential for power, get a 2g GSX and swap a 6-bolt engine in the car. Either way, get an AWD model. Take it from me, I've had 2 GSTs, and now have a GSX, get the GSX first and never regret it.

I would help if you told us what your budget was. A good condition low mileage 99 GSX with minimal mods will run you about 8-10k at least while an older GSX will cost less. I like the 98-99s myself.

Don't forget that Talons are cheaper than Eclipses.

As for GST vs GSX, it depends on what you plan to do with the car. I love my AWD launch. :) GSXs will dominate from a launch, GSTs will dominate from a roll.

Good luck with your car hunt and purchase.

any second gen AWD talon to me is a good bet cause it will be cheaper then an eclipse of the same year and looks better then the first gens in my opinion

Eventually "from a roll" becomes an issue for FWD as well because of a lack of traction. Even with an LSD. If I coulda, I'd have taken a AWD over the FWD.

You don't have to have a 92 to get a 6 bolt 4 bolt car. I drive one. :D

Definitely go AWD unless it's going to be a drag only car. It's a lot more fun. I drove my car FWD for a while and roasting the tires til 95 was only fun for a few days.

Go AWD no madder what. I dont know why you would think FWD us better for drag racing. You have to be the first to say that.

Yeah, welcome to DSM.

You are hearing the best advice you can get here on Tuners.

What is your Budget?
What is your Goal?

Definetly get a AWD. A 4G63T, 6 bolt/7bolt....whatever, just make sure that it runs good, has good oil pressure, stays cool, has decent tires, all the accessories work, and it is in as good of condition as you are willing to live with.

I have seen tons of DSMs, and the sad truth is there are alot of DSMs out there that have been badly abused.

Shop Wisely., and good luck.....

98-99' GSX's are the jewels.

Basically you have to decide between a couple things...

-Price, 1gs are cheaper
-Reliability, 1gs are older and tend to have more things break. This is not always true if it is well taken care of
-6 bolt, hopefully you have read about crankwalk and how it is more common in the 7 bolt engine found after 1992.5 year models. If you want to make big power you are better off with a 6 bolt. Now your choice is weather you are going to buy it in the car, or buy it and put it in. If you buy a 1989-1992.5 it will have the 6 bolt. If you buy the 2g (95-99) then you can swap one in. So it depends on how much work you are going to be doing and if you want to do an engine swap.
-Looks, 2gs look flashier and are more well known (F&F, ect.), but looks are all about opinion and what you like. 1gs can look good if they are clean.

The ultimate dsm can be made from a combination of 1g and 2g parts. For example 1g throttle bodies are bigger and the bov will hold more boost, 2g exhaust manifolds are heavier cast and are less prone to cracking (1gs are prone to cracking).

So first you have to choose what you want in the end and how much money you are willing to spend. Do some research and then buy a car. Good luck :)

You dont "NEED" a 6 bolt to make big power. A 7 bolt can make as much power and be as reliable as a 6bolt. 7 bolts have been known to have crankwalk but its way over rated. My mechanic builds only 7 bolt strokers, since the crank is a little stronger and offers lifetime warranty against crank walk. He has had one bad 7 bolt and many failed 6 bolts. The 6 bolt does not like high rev once its stroked from what he has told me.

I doubt it. You tell Joe Bucci that fwd is horrible for drag racing. He's the one running 9's on a 16g cutting 1.53 60's on slicks. For a drag only car the difference in fwd and awd is nowhere near as apparent as in a car that will see street duty with occasional track action.

True. $300 bucks and some labor and I could have the 4 bolt to go with my 6 bolt. It's just nice when things come the way you want them.

I'll revise my previous statement. If you've got the green, build a 6 bolt 99 GSX.

Beyond money all you have to think about is taste.

I dont care what anyone says. FWD is the worse for anytype of racing. It was developed for better traction in snow thats about it. When the weight transfers on the launch all the traction goes to the rear tires. Back in the day they thought 9's where impossible in FWD.

I agree, and AWD will have more inches of rubber on the ground to grab traction with. Simple. Say you have 215mm tires on your AWD. That's 860mm of rubber grabbing traction. You'd have to have some seriously wide tires on a FWD to match that :)

Hmm, didn't know he hit 9's yet, I'll have to get back to the track. Last thing I heard he was on the verge of 9's with a [email protected].
Only real apparent issue I can see between FWD and AWD for the track is traction. It's not only harder to get traction with a FWD, but when you get traction your more likely to snap axles.
Joe tries different things till he hits that magical spot, last time I was out(long time now) he was snapping axles during burnouts. I don't think he would be highly offended to be told that it is harder to drag a FWD.

On the other hand FWD or RWD seems to be better then AWD for high end drag. I believe some of the fastest AWD cars are being held back by the AWD setup. Then again were talking 8's.

Some how threads like this always turn into AWD vs. FWD.
