okay. i just bought a new talon and its having a starting issue. when i bought the car it had a bad power steering leak which leaked all over the alternator. i assumed that this is the problem and fixed the leak and replaced the alternator with a spair i had around the house (looks brand new). well i throw the battery back in and it doesnt want to start. so i go to jump it and it starts up but when i take the cables off it dies right away. i take the battery to get tested/charged and its not holding a charge.

my question is, is the battery bad or is this alternator i just put on bad? im pretty sure its the battery but i would like to ask everyone else before i go waste money on a optima red top.

thanks in advance

ah never heard that. thanks. i learned how alts worked doing something like that...but not in a car. volts read off the chart. volt meter couldnt read it.

the fuse is 100amps, like i said its 8 bucks at mitsu. its bolted into the fuse box on both sides and it looks like it has a nipple on it and its in a clear case.

Do they keep them in stock? If they dont ill probably just go to the local parts store and buy one. I will wake up tomorrow morning and post a picture of the one i think it is. As i see it on the cover it has two that say alternator. Their is one on the left sid and one on the right side. The one on the right is the fuse that is blown.

Thanks again

If you need to special order the 100a you might want to purchase a couple of them or purchase 1, and 1 of the highest amperage they have in stock. Incase you put the fuse in at it immediately pops. You can get them at NAPA.

Okay first of all, I'm pretty sure the 1G uses an 80amp fuse, as to where a 2G uses a 100amp fuse. They are fusible links and can be had at autozone or advance for between 2 and 5 bucks. The 100amp is blue, not sure about the 80 amp.

That's correct except for the canadian cars that have a 90A alternator. Unless David has a upgraded alternator he should be using the 80A fusable link.

Rather than putting it in and waiting for it to pop you could measure the resistance to ground at the alternator side of the fuse. If it reads 0 ohms or very close to 0 ohms you have either a short in the wire or a bad diode in the alternator. Disconnect the wire from the B+ output and measure again. If it's still bad it's the wire.

I can't distinguish anything from those pictures. I'm guessing you are asking if it's bad. Just get a new one and find out, it's pretty cheap.

if its bad the little nipple in the middle will be gone. or it will be broken somewhere....and yes that looks like it from the pics you have posted.

no im seeing if this is the alternator fuse. i already know its bad im just making sure because on the black box their are two things that say "alt" which i assume is alternator.

thanks for the help

alright i know its been a long time but i kinda forgot to post what actually fixed my problem. i got a new battery, installed a new alternator, and then replaced the busted fuse and its been running like a champ since. hope this helps other members in the future.
