Balance shafts out of phase cause a misfire?

Hi

I just did my first timing belt job. Followed the instructions from the VFAQ and my Haynes manual. When I started the car it was idling really rough and had a very bad misfire. Can an out of phase balance shaft cause misfiring? After installing the belt all timing marks lined up. I have double checked the crank and cam timing marks already too.

Thanks,
Brian

Not to get off topic about the balance shafts, but are the belts in correct tension? This would not cause a misfire unless it was very very off .. just curious and is their and other noises like a whining or somthing coming from that area?

They may not be tensioned correctly. But, they would be too tight if not. I installed a new tensioner and the main timing belt is VERY tight.

Have you checked elictrical stuff, just to make sure you didn't knock a plug wire loose, or maybe your crank angle sensor? Do you think or know your balance shafts are miss timed if so whether or not it's causing your missfire I would highly recomend fixing it. Mine were out of time when I bought my car, it ran fine but vibrated so badly at higher rpms I lost half (maybe slightly exagerated) the bolts off my motor. Are your cam marks lined up pretty exactly paralell? When I am done if I have any question I take a straight edge to it to make sure.

How would the belt tension affect how it ran?

Check to make sure you got the cam gears lined up right. If you retarded that exhaust cam enough, it might do that to ya ;)

The marks are lined up perfectly. Cam gears line up and the crank sprocket is maybe 1 centimeter lower than top dead center. Could that be a problem?

Also I had to remove the intake cam sprocket to change the seal. It spun a little bit toward the front of the car, but I put it back the way it was with the dowel pin at 12 o'clock.

I had to unbolt the crank angle sensor to get the balance shaft belt on and off. It's only two bolts. I took it off and put it right back on. If that were the problem wouldn't I be getting a CEL?

I am heading out to the garage to tear it all back apart. At least it's always easier the second time around. :thumb:

All apart now. Everything lined up. Oil pump rotated back towards the allignment marks. I don't really understand how belt tension could have an affect like that.

Balance shaft belt can not cause a missfire... only bad vibrations.
Timing belt can cause a miss fire though, but only if the timing marks on the cams or the crank are off. If only the oil pump was off, it would only cause bad vibrations as-well, because this inturn, put the one balance shaft out of time, but no missfire.
Double and triple check all of your timing marks anytime you are messing with the timing belt.
Next time you do a timing belt or have it off for any other reason... remove those pesky balance shafts!!! It can be done in a matter of hours and saves time and money in the long run. (not to mention the fact that it is less rotating mass for the engine which will free up a bit of horsepower and one less belt to fail and take out the timing belt with it)
