Bad oil leak.

So I was driving on the freeway when I noticed a slight smell and I looked back and saw a blue smoke trailing my car. I pull over on the shoulder and see a nice trail of oil. It's constantly dripping from the oil pan area. Anyone have any idea what it could be? It happened so randomly. My CEL came on also.

Based on your description, I would say your engine is leaking. You're going to have to crawl under the car and take a look. A motor can leak from anywhere. If you have a leak that is that bad, I wouldn't even start the car without investigating it. It could cost you a motor, for what could have been 5 minutes of getting a little dirty. Most likely, your oil filter backed off if it is a bad as you described.

Check your oil filter as Michael Z said. You either double gasketed it, or it backed off.

recently my oil return line on my 1g cracked at the flex section and that caused it to drip on to my downpipe and i also noticed smoke from behind me and it caused a preety steady drip of oil from under my car near the oil pan.... you might wanna check that out too..
