My 1G 4G63T started running real rough, like a miss. So I changed plugs (gapped correct) and wires, but no change. After testing for spark I had found that there was no spark on 2 and 3. So the coil must be gone.
My question is how do I check that coil and how do I replace it? I only have a chance to do anything after work when its getting dark, so its hard to see sometimes. The coils are under the intake and I cant see any wires that go to it :S I assume it would be easier to change it with the intake off, but I want to test it to make sure first.
If it is the coil I will just buy a COP system for it, but then again I dont know where it would plug into.
If anyone has any pictures to help me that would be great!
thanks in advance

To test the coil pack:

To remove the coil pack there are 4, 12 mm bolts holding it to the intake manifold. It also has one plug from the wire harness that connects to it from the back side of the motor. I will come off easily without removing the intake manifold.

Here, I went and snapped some pics on my spare motor, it makes it easy to see.

2, 12mm bolts that can be reached from the top.

2, 12mm bolts that can be reached from the side (right side of the picture). Also the triangular connector (bottom left corner of the picture) is where the wire harness plugs into the coil pack.

Hope this helps!

help it run smoother at high rpms and it costs almost the same as a new coil! If anyone knows where I can get a coil or COP system for a decent price in or around Edmonton, let me know please!

Just to kinda add to this thread and answer a question I had, is there any aftermarket performance coils for our applications. Like for older trucks and vans and such, there is like MSD coils and Accel. Is there anything like that that he can look into?

Ok, I was driving my GST fine and one day it wouldn't start. It'll crank but not start. So i check the fuel lines, fuel pump..not a fuel problem, intake manifold , air mass sensor, not a air problem, so I automatically thought it was a spark problem, so I bought a new distrubator..still nothing..so im thinking it might be the ICM ( Ignition control module) but before I go out and buy a new one, what is a way to found out that is the problem for sure

Simple answer, no. MSD makes a coil for the 420A Eclipses and Talons but not for us. The stock DSM coil pack is good for 500 + hp (some EVO owners actually UPGRAGE to DSM coils). Unless you are making over 500, I wouldn't worry about your coil pack.

You bought a new distributer for your GST? Where did you put it? 4G63 DSM's run a distributerless ignition system (i.e. there is NO distributer). The only exception are the 1.8 L 4G37 engines which do run distributers.

ignition coil. not distrubator, my bad

First off, are you getting spark at all? Is so, in which cylinders? It is easy to check spark so I would do that before buying any more new parts. Did you get a NEW coil pack or at least a known working one? If it's not the coil pack it's usually the power transistor, MPI relay, or ECU. Rather then replacing all of those though, it would be a good idea to see if you are actually getting spark or not and work from there.

Hope this helps!

DSM's use a wasted spark ignition system. Basically two cylinders fire at the same time, thus the title. Even with a COP setup, the stock ECU will still fire two cylinders at the same time and the current draw from two smaller coils is is greater then each stock coil. Plus the smaller COP coils need more dwell time which means you need an good engine management system or at least a 2 channel CDI box. Just swapping in a COP can actually result in less performance unless done correctly (i.e. more expensive then a new stock coil).

Unless you are making 500+ hp and experiencing breakup in the high RPMs under high boost I would just get a replacement coil. At least do some research before going out and getting COP setup.

Hope this helps!

Here are a couple of threads on the subject to get you started:

oh ok. Ya, I get what your saying :) A new coil will cost me 260(NAPA) - 350(warehouse) and the COP I found was 350.. so I figured, for the same price the COP was a sure bet! but now Im thinking just the coil will be good for now.
Still having trouble finding a working coil for cheap! Id like to get it within 2 weeks from now, seeing as I have a trip comming up for the xmas holidays :)

So I just put a known-working coil in and STILL no spark to 2 or 3 cyls! While checking for spark I did see #3 spark once, but only once. I am so confused right now :S

any other ideas ???
