Has anyone ever tried this on a dsm? I was considering this before, but had no real questions. I am trying to see if anyone has adapted this for our platforms, due to the fact that they are almost exactly alike. Just like 3KGT's/Stealth's, their AWS works only at certains speeds though, after 31MPH I believe, but before that its not engaged, what about GVR-4's? Any prerequisites for that? Like speed or a button to push? This would be something else to add to the DSM Platform, but is it worth doing?
 
From what the guys at RRE told me when I'd asked about it last year, most GVR guys serious about handling tend to remove the AWS system. The 1G rear control arms are similar (in their half-rubber glory) but lack the steering rack back there to actually guide them, as the degrading rubber allows the rear tires' toe to flop back and forth freely.
 
Oh, well, that is interesting. Most 3/S guys say that they will keep it, but some don't use it. I have been in quite a few 3/S's, and its really good for handling, but at the same time, its only working after a certain speed. And they have ECS, but some guys disable that too. It feels great though, but I have never been in a GVR-4 either with it, only 3/S's, but if it feels the same as the big brothers, I would like to do it for my 2g, if possible. I still don't understand why we didn't get something like that for DSM's, only the hybrid cousins or 3/S's did... But hey, we got the 4g63, the envy of all others...
 
If AWS had been such a good idea, it'd be on current cars. It was a fascinating curio, but a gimmick without a payoff -other than maintenance and repair profits for the dealers.
As for adapting the system to a DSM.... I don't even know where you'd start. Nothing will fit directly, and god knows what kind of jimcrackery goes on with the electronics part of it. But just like twincharging, we'll all be keen to watch.
 
Oh man, I would have thought it would have been something great to do. I've felt it engaged at high speeds while driving, and man, its great, but that was on a 3/S, not a GVR-4 with AWS. It was just food for thought, I didn't realize a lot of guys disable it, yeah, and I agree, if it were so great, it would still be used today, but AWD is the only good thing that we still use today. TwinCharging is a feat in itself, I saw the guy that did it, man, good luck with that beast.
 
AWS has no electronic components whatsoever.

The steering rack has 2 additional lines coming out of it.

when you are at speed(~45) a mechanical switch is activated located on top of the GVR4 3-bolt

I installed 4-bolt internals in my 3 bolt so I can still have AWS

in theory you could instill all these parts in a 1g

I dont konw if they could bolt up to a 2g
 
Oh, its out of the question then. It would all be a custom job, and its not worth it then if its got to have a speed sensor for the AWS to kick in, and if the brackets need to be adapted for a 4 bolt sus rather than a 3 bolt. It would take alot of time, but the little performance value is not worth it, whereas twincharging is.
 
All of the 3s guys i know say that thats the first major mod they do for handling. They pull that out because it's pointless. I imagine the same would apply for the gvr4. Because really, like said above, it doesn't even move sub ~45mph.
 
I have never been in a car with aws, but I'd like to see what it feels like at high speed cornering. I can imagine it's somewhat worth it. The skyline used the HICAS 2 steering system and that seemed to work very well for the GT cars, I don't see why it's a bad idea. Maybe extra weight? If it really does handle better, I don't see a reason why not to use it.

Oh, and for the guy that started this thread, ANYTHING can be done with enough patience.
 
Slightly off topic but the 88-91 prelude 4ws rack is completely mechanical through a driveshaft from the rack to a gearbox with tie rod ends. The box comes sealed for life. This Improved high speed handling worlds over the 2ws models. Too bad 4ws is illegal in racing. I think this rack would be the best choice to try to adapt.
 
So if you have a stock GVR-4, you can't race period? I highly doubt it, but show your proof, this is interesting. I know I have seen old Preludes at some of the events, so if you say they have an early Prelude, even though its FWD, but it has AWS, it can't compete? Hmm, interesting...
