This was an interesting event. I arrived at AMP under overcast skies. As I began to unload my trailer, the heavens opened up and it began to pour rain. Ugh!
So the question was to swap on my race slicks or just run my old bald street tires. Either set would really suck in the wet, but I felt the race slicks would suck the least. So I stood out in the rain and swapped my wheels.
Fortunately, things took a turn for the better. Just before the event began, the rain stopped and the sun broke through. It turned out to be a beautiful day.
As always, the course at AMP was fast and huge. We’re talking a 2.5km slalom course with the majority of it run in 3rd gear. Very fun!
After the first set of runs were complete, I had the 3rd quickest time overall. Not bad, and I knew I had lots of room for improvement.
I dropped a bunch of time on my second run, but was still 3rd overall. I hadn’t run a course this fast on these tires yet, so I was still feeling them out and searching for their limits. I knew there was more time out there.
Third run I pushed it hard and got the fastest time of the day by a fair margin, however I hit one cone and received a 2 second penalty. But even with penalty, I still had FTD. Muahahah!
Then my nemesis in the 240SX pulled out a quick clean run that wasn’t as fast, but beat my time after penalties.
So I had one run left to snatch FTD back. I did a big stutterbox launch, and NLTS to 2nd, flew thought the course and… @#$%^ hit a cone! My raw time ended up being slower than my previous run, so I finished the event with another 2nd overall. So close!!!
