auto/manual cam question

hey guys. i just wanted to confirm..

i heard through the grapevine that auto tsi cams have a longer duration than the tsi manual cams. but have the same amount of lift is this true?

i also heard there is soemthing to gain by swapping either your exhaust or intake cam on your manual with a auto tsi cam.(cant remember which one)

have any of you heard of this ?


i also read in a performance book that 91-92 d and c cams are best to use if your not looking to buy aftermarket.

also where can the type of cam be located.. are they letter stamps on the very end of them?

the power gain wouldn't be enough to make it worth the time to tear it down for the swap. Run some upgraded cams.

if you are on a short budget, there are lots of affordable cam options and their are probably some for sale slightly used.

The exhaust cams are the same. The manual intake cam is a little bigger but not enough to even notice. Here are the difference's.

For a stock setup? Maybe a set of 264's. Until then your stock cams are fine.

why would you say a setof 272s are a down grade for a stock turbo?

Yea stock would do fine bu BC 272s will give a T25 a better power ban than a stock cam

An anyways the BC 272s are the smallest and cheapest of the 272s.

Which 264 do yu recommend him getting a HKS is about 400 a cam.

I can see i i recommended a Kelford or a FP but a BC isnt a rough cam even for a stock turbo

First off I never said it was a downgrade. His profile shows him only have an ACT2100 and exhaust. He is a long way off from needing cams. Once he either upgrades to turbo or gets all of the supporting mods to need upgraded cams then I would recommend HKS 272's. The BC 272 cam is ok but if you are going to spend 300-350 on cams then at least get DKS 272's. The BC cams have been shown to not make the power that the HKS ones do. In some cases the BC 280's actually don't out perform the HKS 272's. 272's on a 14b on stock boost is going to kill the low end of the turbo and give very little up top for it.

And I didnt read his profile, yes he should upgrade to atleast a 16G before upgrading to a larger cam

He has a 1g guys. And I ran my 2.3 on stock cams. THAT's restriction .

Its not worth swapping stock cams for another set of stock cams,unless you were rebuilding the engine and had the other cams sitting around. Upgrade the turbo and all supporting mods, then worry about cams.

thanks for all the responses.. my cars engine is completly out and tore down currently and i figured while the head was apart if there was something to gain with something i already had. why not use it ?

i plan on getting a 16g turbo in the near future. and getting cams after i get her running.. i will buy aftermarket cams when i have to change the timing belt.
