Are Cams worth it?

I was thinking about buying either a set of BC 272 or the DKS 272 cams. I have a ported head with ss valves, 3-angle valve job, si dual springs, manley titanium retainers and locks. With a ported evo gt 16g and the engine bored .040 over.

Would I notice a difference in the power gain with a set of 272's? Or, would I just be wasting my money. Would either one of those cams work with my head set up? Should I wait till I get a bigger turbo, or is the 16g good enough for the cams?

I would go DKSs for sure since they are mad cheap, come with a 1yr warrenty, and are an exact same grind as HKS 272s. yes they are most definately worth it, you will see more power in the higher RPM range, the turbo will breath more in the higher RPM range, and you will be able to up the boost a little (long as no knock is seen), and hold a little more boost till redline. The gain of 25-35hp for $350 IMO thats well worth it. Also the good thing is that when you finally do upgrade to a larger turbo like a 50 Trim or what ever the cams will improve even more.

There's a few misconceptions that need to be cleared up here:

Stock cams will hold MORE boost to redline on a smaller turbo. If you're running 23-24 psi on the EVO III and add cams, you should be fine, however you won't be able to hold big boost 28-30 psi since the motor will be outflowing the turbo.

Also, cams will make the motor run leaner since the increased airflow demands more fuel, so there's a need to be careful and monitor before adding boost. Provided you can maintain low charge temps through the IC and you have enough injector and fuel pump, you should be able to safely run the same amount of boost as before.

I would recommend a 264/272 equivalent if you plan on upgrading your turbo in the future. If you'll be staying with the EVO III for the life of the car, then a 264/264 equivalent will still create plenty of additional power throughout the working RPM range. I do agree that these are a great mod as long as other supporting mods are in place.

Cams would definately be worth the money. I'm running comp 200's. The car pulls like a freight train in the upper rpms. I can't speak so much for the change i got from just them as i changed the turbo and added a fmic at the same time.

They are definately a good bang for the buck mod.

I got the HKS 264/272 combo recently used for cheap, and I love them. It sounds mean at idle, a good amount of lope if you set the idle to 750. If you set it to 950 or greater it smoothes out. The cams kick in with the turbo, so it doesn't feel any more laggy and I didn't lose any bottom end at all. It gave the same feeling as running more boost; the turbo hits harder and keeps pulling harder to redline. :dsm:

Ive decided to go with the bc 272 cams. I called extremepsi cause they have the dks cams, and its $400 till you send in your cores. Then you get $40 back.

Thats not the reason I went with the bc cams though. I called there this morning about 3 times till someone picked-up the phone. Brian Crower answered and I told him what I was thinking about buy. Then he explained it all to me and told me they would work fine with my other head components. He was extremely informative and friendly. Then after he explained it all, he told me the price. $316 for the pair of 272's.

Since he was helpfull and the price was right I couldnt pass it up.

I wish I had a dyno of the stock cams in my car before these get installed. I cant wait to see the power gain on these cams.

I had a tb slip and i dont have time to fix it. So I had the car towed to Buschurs and he told me the head was gone. So why not upgrade. I picked up a ported head that was milled, pressure checked, ad powercoated off ebay for $150, I alredy have the si dual springs, manley titanium retainers and locks. Just ordered some new copper valve guides, si valves, and ferrea seals. The bc cams are on there way. Why put stock or what you had back in when you can upgrade......

We just installed Comp 101200 cams in my friend's Evo 16g car. Before his airflow/rev number would peak right at 5k and then start falling off, starting at 190 and falling into the 170s. After the cam install the airflow hit 190 around the same rpm but then stayed perfectly flat until almost 7k rpm before starting to decline. The car has about the same midrange torque hit but the top end power is massively improved and the car is much faster for it. The side benefit is that the car runs through the rev range so much smoother. With the stock cams the engine felt sort of "thrashy" above 5k, like it didn't really want to be there. With the 101200s it feels smooth up past 7k, like it was perfectly happy there.

There's no doubt that cams will help with top end. But after a certian point in the rpm range the stock intake manifold starts to become a bit of a bottleneck. But you really wont notice much if you only take it to 7k with cams.

I only have one restriction in my flow and thats the exhaust manifold. It;s a stock 1g. But, other then that, the car has a sheet metal style intake maifold, evo o2 housing (ported), 2.5" buschur exhaust from the turbo back with 4" tip, dejon uicp and intake pipe, and a ported head. So I dont think ill have any problems with flow but with that exhaust manifold. Hopefully the soft licp and stock side mount dont hurt the flow. Maybe after the first of the year ill get an evo III exhaust manifold thats ported.

Even with the manifold being stock, it should still pull like a mother.....right?

Also, has anyone had any kind of problem with the bc cams? just wondering....
