I am buying a 97 eclipse GSX with minor mods, 75,000 on the body but with new fully rebuilt 6 bolt engine and modified transmission. I would drive the car for about a year or so but later I will be gone for 2 years and the car will not be driven while I am gone. Should I sell the car and make maybe a little money off of it before I leave or should I keep the car and when I come back after the 2 years maybe sell it? The idea behind waiting would be that maybe the cars value will go up in two years and it will be more sought after and with the car in such good shape and mileage wise on engine and body... what's the likelihood it would it's value would rise?
Or I guess I could come back after the 2 years and just run it until there is nothing left of it..... how reliable and how long will the car last if I just keep it? I wouldn't be beating it to death, just as a normal daily driver and a an occasional spirited drive.

Thanks.

Honestly, you don't have a collector car. So storing it won't make the value go up, but you would probably be able to get back out of it what you paid for it. If you have to pay a storage fee, I would not do it. If you can store it for free, then its up to you. You wouldn't have to worry about buying a car when you got back I guess. But in 2 years, you might not even like the car anymore. Its ultimately your call.

good thing about Norway where i live is that the GSX is a collector car :)

i bought mine for 40000$ 2 years ago , wich is a pretty decent price as there's only 4 registered GSX'es in Norway to this day. Its damn near impossible to get them registered due to some insane law ( skylines and supras are impossible to register )

So i'll probably sell mine for 40000$ again when and if i decide to sell it

I see $$$ in my future.... Where did you say you live? NORWAY.. If this is true im going to find all the dsms on craigslist and ship them to you and we can start a business:D.

haha, well there's a list on the official Eclipse forum here in Norway , theres 1 x 1990 GSX , one 1995 GSX , one 97 and one 98GSX currently registered here. This is due to an insane law called 1.15 , wich states that all DSM cars , when beeing registered in norway must be in its original state. We are talking the original studs , seats, dash, friggin HVAC panel , everything must be the same as when it left the factory.. In adition to that, only 4 GSX's can be registered at the same time , they register them as "collectable items" . So there are 4 gsx, 4 skylines and 4 supras wich are street-legal in Norway , the quota is filled and no more can be registered, its quite insane really

The price for these cars is ofcourse high due to that, but also Norway has the highest prices on cars in the world, and the highest fuel prices . So even though we are the richest country in the world by far pr person , we dont drive around in Ferraris etc :p

Holy shiet no way? lucky you!

If you already have it, I would hold onto it. If you sell it and there are only 4 in the country, your chances on one being for sale aren't great.

Ya so since I live in Utah, the value will probably drop or stay where it's at? And I should just sell it before I leave and get good money ot of it while I can it sounds like.

Lol @ thread hijack.
I would sell it. if it isnt being driven in the 2 years that you are gone breaks will seize ect and it will take a lot of $$ getting it back on the road when you come back. And if you decide to sell it when you come back then you would have to do the work and lose the money.
ultimately it depends on how you feel about the car.

Sell it before you leave. If somehow these cars obtain collector status in 2 years and actual book value goes up the earnings won't be substantial because of all the money it will take to replace stuff that's dry rotted, all the fluids, and other stuff wears out more just from sitting rather than running. But it's just a common 4-cylinder car that loses value every day, and most people ask way too much for theirs based on their own labor invested.

If its just gonna sit there for 2 years maybe something will go wrong with the engine for sitting so long. Maybe you can let a family memeber borrow it while you're gone? I wouldn't get rid of it. That's just me though :p
