Any Bay Area Transmission shops recommendation for clutch install?

That's nice, but he already posted he could do the job.. just doesn't have the space like I said earlier of reasons why someone would take their car to the shop.

But I see your point of view, maybe some rookie might find it helpful..

GL on opening a shop too

LOL it was a plan in hindsight... Never would I make another shop. We jsut need our current shops to either keep doing the excellent work they are doing or make the needed improvements to remain. Its a hard job to run a shop and NorCal has lost a LOT of our local shops and if supporting the MidNight Performance (Honda), FFTec (4G63s), Work/RA (STis) then thats what I'll do.

I'm actually setting up a tuning appointment with FFTec as soon as we can collaborate our schedules. :rocks:

Quick update: Finally did the clutch job at FFTEC last week. I went with 2600 ACT with ACT flywheel, SS clutch line, new ball and fork.

I must have stalled 6 times when i picked it up. The engage point was really low, I didnt think of it at first since I needed to rush home. Warrior game :) Unfortunately, when i exited off the freeway (20 miles away) I could not get into gear. Called Sean, around 830pm luckily he was still at the shop. We troubleshooted on the phone for about 5 min and basically the clutch needed to be adjusted. It was so bad that I had to press the clutch in only a quarter of the way to get into gear.

Drove it back to FFTEC that same night and Sean adjusted it in a few minutes. All I can say is wow! The clutch grabs HARD. The next day i took it in mad 101 to SF traffic for about an hour and my left leg built some muscle.

Thanks Sean and FFTEC!

AFter 300+ miles of driving, I am now use to the stiffness and the clutch might have gotten a little lighter. I did have to change my driving technique in first and second gear because low RPMS it engages hard, so now I find myself slipping the clutch in the first two gears.

Time to turn up the booost.

another +1 for FFtec... i had my car towed there(from reccomendations from this forum) due to blown clutch, so i got the 2600 full clutch kit w/ organic street disk for my 1G 6-bolt, they not only put it on in like a day, but also gave me a "list" of things to look for, replace, watch for, and they got me the :talon:right size reducer for my UICP while it was in the shop...tranny work was 600$ plus cost of clutch kit, but i also had them do other work so my total was more$$.:dsm::dsm:

Glad to hear everything worked out well. Keep an eye out on the stuff from the "list" of problems... good luck with the car!!

I've never been to fft. where is it located? my clutch is slipping in 4th and 5th now too. I have a centerforce dual friction clutch.

yeah im still around and beating up on the occasional honda here and there.

I got bigger problems than a clutch ATM however. I have building crank pressure causing oil to pop out the dipstick >_<

Gonna do a compression test. Once thats fixed, then clutch time.

How hard is a clutch to do? Is it a DIY kinda job or shall i have it done professionally?

It depends on the space/tools/time you have. I have done it enough times on my own to not want to do it again. But in all actuality its not that bad. If its your only transportation I would for sure take it to a shop. You never know what could happen and a shop is obviously much better prepared to handle the suprises that might show up.

well im gonna go buy a cheap commuter car this week as my DD and keep the eclipse on blocks till fixed.

Its at the dealer right now doing a leakdown test.
i just blew 180 180 150 155 in a compression test. I'm thinkin blown HG..

Lots of cheap Kia's in the bay area and theyre great on gas mileage. Good for jumpin around town while i fix the eclipse. I'm about to post a new thread see if anyone has any recommendations for the work im gonna be doing on it.

yeah last i heard paul was doing a little work for fftec and they wanted to hire him as a full time mechanic, but he already has that other job and is re-modeling his house so he had to decline, so either way it would have been fftec ftw.

You might have to pay a little more (not sure about that) but it would be no questions asked peace of mind that its gong to get done right the first time and they will back it up. :thumb:

Someone bought EIP Racing from Paul for shit load off money but he still work there. The last I saw they didn't add anymore people to work there beside people who do the body work. He is still the primary mechanic who is the only person that can tune and know how to operate the Mustang dyno. They moved to a bigger shop at the other corner of the plaza to add an oven for a body shop.

I think you are talking about a different Paul.

Im talking about russian Paul from NewLogics motorsports (newlogics was his name on here). He worked out of a hole in the wall shop in richmond/san pablo but knew his $hit and built some good dsm's. (*mine*) haha

yea Paul newlogics knew his stuff. Did a 6bolt swap in a 2g that my cousin now owns. Sadly he no longer works on them. It was a good alternative for people who wanted a mechanic who knew DSMs. Hoping to get some work done by pneumo in the future now.

maybe i can bribe paul to come out to san jose and help me wrench on my mofo car. But hes probably not interested. Paul rocked. He did my motor mounts for dirty cheap and theyre still rocking solid.

That's the problem... Paul still had overhead, he had bills to pay to keep his shop open. Running a shop on what he charged his customers is what drove him out of business, and changing his career. Paul was and still is a very good and nice guy, he just charged what DSMers were willing to pay, which is next to nothing.

Jerry

yea, i had some work done by fftec about 6 months ago, the work itself was satifactory, but the prices were insane... they charged me $550 for the labor on a clutch job!... sean is deffentily knowledgeable on dsms, a little wierd, but very knowledgeable . id recommend fftec if your pockets are deep, if not do what the rest of us do and pick up a hanes manual and wrench yourself.

Or perhaps he just made an adult decision to get on with his life and accepted from the beginning that he wasn't going to keep the shop forever.... But then again, neither you nor I are paul, so its rather hard for either of us to say why he decided to close shop. From my knowledge it was more of a time issue than a money issue...

2g transmissions are much harder to remove than 1g transmissions, and thus are more expensive. You get what you pay for, and I know sean isn't one to cut corners. You can find cheaper places, but similar to buying a turbo on ebay, it might work, it might not. You might have bolts missing/improperly torqued, you might not.

Damn Straight!

I work on my car when i have time and im confident that i can do the job cleanly and correctly, if i havent done it before and its slightly out of my skill level, i might ask a friend (Dave) to help and kick them some money for their time. IF the job is too big for me and friends, and too complicated/dangerous that if i mess up that i might not be able to control my car or blow something up thus hurting myself or another driver, i'll pay the extra money to have FFTEC, the only compitent and completely knowledgble DSM shop in the area take car of my car. You pay for their skills and tools and facility, and a big part goes to peace of mind that you know it will get done correctly.

One other thing, everyone is "wierd" in their own way, i know i am! haha

Agreed. :thumb:

Sean tends to smell funny, and after a certain hour of the day, he starts to walk on his knuckles and grunt more then talk. :tease:
