I'm doing the 95 awd a/t to 95/96 awd m/t swap and I found a decent site (car-part.com) to find a used tranny but on the search page I get:

M.T., FWD, w/o turbo
A.T., FWD, w/o turbo
M.T., AWD, 23 spline
A.T., AWD
M.T., AWD, 21 spline
M.T., AWD, 22 spline
M.T., FWD, w/turbo
A.T., FWD, w/turb

Please explain splines to me, and if it's too complicated just tell me what spline count I need (this is stressful enough already LOL) Thanks guys.

(Also some of the results say "CHECK SPLINE" or "BE SURE ON COUNT" what's all that mean?)

The output shaft from the transmission to the transfer case has "teeth" that fit into the mating part of the transfercase. Those "teeth" are the splines on the the shaft.

It's the output shaft splines on the AWD trans that differ between the early 1G's and the later 1G's.

That makes sense, thank you gentleman. I did a search on transfer cases and it says:

MT, 21 spline
AT
MT, 22 spline
MT, 23 spline

Alright, obviously I need to match the splines together with the tranny I get. Uhmmm, I heard that 97-98-99 transfer cases will not fit on a 95-96, is that because the splines are different or is there another reason for that?

Sorry, but sometimes you guys scare me.

LOL Who scares you?

I believe that is why, but don't quote me on that. But I do know for sure that whatever year transmission and transfer case you get...make sure you get the same years rear differential. The automatic's is geared differently than the manual.

Okay, well I'm talking with these people now.. I need to know what spline to get, does it matter as long as those two peices match and my year is the same with my rear diff?

Sorry bro, not all of us were born with an innate knowledge in auto-mechanics. Thanks for your help. :dsm:

None of us were. That's why we've spent years and years reading books. Or, looking words up in a dictionary.
So we can thanklessly draw pictures for those of you who won't.
