I'm at the part where I'm supposed to remove the belt from the power steering pump. However, I have no clue *how* to do that. The PS pump has been loosened (all mounting belts removed, just the belt holding it in place), but that doesn't buy me enough slack to slip the belt off. There's no mention of need to try to remove the pulley from the pump (and I don't know if that might damage the pump anyways).

How do you guys do it?

There are 4 bolts on the power steering pump that hold it in place. Two that you need to reach thru the pulley to get at, and two on the back side of the pump. One of the ones on the back side is for the rotation point, and the other one is like the two on front, for tightening when its in the correct place.

Yes, I did that. :) However, I can't get the belt off of the pulley to finish removing the pump...

Finally got it. Just took a couple hours of wiggling it around & pulling on the belt. Wondering if my car had the right belt installed, the adjuster was all the way at the back so no room to play with (and it was plenty tight)?

Now that I finally got the alternator out, it turns out that I probably could have left the power steering pump installed. I was able to drop the alternator out the bottom, no problem. Just had to disconnect the oil sender wire and push the big dangly bunch of alternator wires to one side. Didn't have to mess around with the alternator bracket or the water pump pulley (which the factory manual tells you to do).

Pulling the power steering pump did give one advantage though, it made it easier to slip a pry bar in to get the alternator past the lip that it was hung up on.

In other notes for any that might use this as reference, I ended up not removing the A/C fan since there's some stuff ziptied to it on my car. Would have made the job a little easier (especially for pulling the voltage regulator plug), but there was sufficient wrenching and removal room even with it in there.

It does sound like you had the wrong belt. It shouldn't have been that tight. I'd recommend going and getting another one thats a bit longer.

I remember getting that belt off was a pain, even after loosening everything. I had to put a bit of force into it, but it eventually came off. It's a tight fit, for sure, and took some patience coming off and especially going back on. I always wish they'd make engine bays more convenient... then again, we'd probably end up with10ft square engine bays at that point with everything color coded. Would that be so bad?

hehe DSM's aren't that bad i mean you can swap out a turbo with the engine in thats pretty convenient. Wish I could say the same for my 300zx.
