Aletrnator choke fuse, now no boost gauge light and radio in and out.

OK, first off don't say SEARCH because I searched for last hour on this subject.

OK, so last night I was putting a brand new shiny heat shield on my exhaust manifold, and when I was doing the bolt on the o2 housing, I accidentally touched the alternator with a wrench and I guess either the shield or the manifold and it blew my alternator choke fuse. So I went to Advance Auto and got a new one so now my windows, vents, and radio works! But now my radio will stay on but the sound will stop then come back again, over and over. Also my aftermarket boost gauge light doesn't come on when I turn my headlights on like it did before. I checked fuses etc. no deal. Someone please help me here on this subject. Thanks in advance.

A possibility is you actually damaged those units depending on what kind of power was dissipated into the system. I would hook up your boost gauge power/light directly to the battery to see if it's still working.

A smaller possibility is you damaged your voltage regulator, but then that would affect all other devices (have you checked the voltage from the alternator? if you're exceeding 14.4 (cranking voltage) you have an issue..

Of course, check all fuses and relays. Though I suspect option #1 is most probable.

Well I sure did get a nasty shock, and a pretty good burn from the ensuing sparks. Wouldn't the fuse on the cd deck blow though if it was introduced to massive amounts of voltage? I will go unplug the boost gauge and try that real fast now.

I just had the same issue with my car, the radio would die when other power would be drained (i.e. hit the brakes and the power that went to the brake lights would kill the radio), it turned out to be a bad regulator and I had to replace the alternator. Use a volt meter on your battery and see if its over charging or under charging.

I'll just take it in to Advance Auto and have them test it, that way if it's bad, I'm right there. Thanks for the input!

My alternator and battery checked out good at two different auto stores. I think maybe the surge that busted my fuse also ruined the radio But I did fix my boost gauge so that's good.

two different auto stores. i hope i was the second store you came to. because we just got that amazing $6k midtronics system tester.

check all your ground wires, and follow the wires that you shorted out.

Haha yeah you were my second one. I had Autozone test for me first because I was up at a friends right next door to it before came to Advance. I'll go check my grounds. I know I need a new chassis ground, but it wasn't acting up before I blew that fuse.
