air filter replacement

I have a 1992 mitsubishi eclipse gs non turbo and i want to change the air filter to gain acceleration.
but i have problem with the air flow meter! how can I replace the air filter and what to do with the air flow meter?

can I keep the stock air filter but remove it from its box? will this give me acceleration??or I need a special air filter?

first of all your profile says you have a gst and you just said its non turbo so you may want to change something
