I have a gm maft setup on the way and im gonna run it in the blowthru config. and about the intake pipe. i still have the stock pipe. could i just put a long K&N filter directly on the turbo and not have a pipe or should i get a pipe because the turbo may be sucking in hot air?

You can put it directly on the turbo, I've seen it done on dsm's before, and it's VERY common on Supras and SR20DET/RB20DET cars. It's not a bad idea to have a bit of piping to get it away from the heat, or build some type of heatshiled between the filter and the turbo, but you can put it directly on the turbo if you like.

I ran some 3in piping under the fender and i am sucking in cooler air outside the engine bay. Its really up to you. You probley won't feel the difference.

Wouldn't mounting the filter that low increase the risk of sucking up water?

Maybe you can get some pics or explain this a little better?

Think he's talking about putting the air filter near where the SMIC use to be, so it can draw air in from that opening in the front of the bumper. My friend has his air filter set up like that.

Thats exactly what I'm talking about. I would give you some pics but my cars getting checked for CW and cooling issues. The higher you get it the better chance you have of staying away from water. You wont have any problems if you watch how you drive in the rain and dont drive when its flooding.

i just turned mine upside down

im gonna bring this back to life, so i dont start another thread on the same subject.

im gonna put a filter directly on my turbo once i get my blowthrew setup installed.

Does anyone know the diameter of the compressor inlet of an EVO 3 b16g turbo?
i would go out and measure mine, but i just got home from some "spirited" driving(just installed a fuel pump). and its quite hot.
thanks

i was looking at a filter like this one, with the inlet at an angle, and i would angle it down, to try to stay away from the heat.
and would it make that much of a difference without a heat shield.

edit: that 2.25" is on the inside, so the outside of the inlet will be a bit bigger, right? so a filter with a 2.4" or 2.5" inlet would fit?

has anyone made a shield like they are talking about, between the hot side of the turbo, mani and downpipe? and could take a pic

No, the inside "ID" of the airfilter should be 2.25" also think about getting the K&N "DRYCHARGER" filter condom to help keep water out since you will be pointing it down.

Ingesting hot underhood air and cool(er) outer air DOES make a difference. I wish I had a heat shield for my intake pipe right now, especially on a hot day. I can just feel the timing being pulled on a hot day because of the hot underhood air that my turbo ingests.
