AEM Wideband Install question.

I just did my first tuning with WOT tuning and open loop after installing evo injectors using knock and estimated AFR. I have a AEM wideband and just need to install it so I can do a better tune. Looking at my functions it appears like I can just replace the front o2 with my wideband and I can make it use the wideband in place of the stock o2 as long as I run it to a pin on my ecu? Is this how most people install there widebands or do they just have an extra bung welded in and use the wideband as well??
 
This has been asked/answed a bazillion times...the only problem is the "DSM World" is divided on the 'correct answer'. Some quote the Installation Manual, which says 36 inches away from Turbo, others say no problem with it in the factory (front) Location. There was a thread at one time that even was trying to do a 'survey'...to gather factual evidence if the factory location was burning up sensors. The guys at ECMLink (and many DSM's) use the front location..no problems. I don't think this will ever be 100% decided. (However, the closer it is to the turbo, the faster it will respond to A/F changes)
 
AEM Specify 36'' from Turbo outlet(o2 housing outlet).. Yes is hot up there but thats not the reason why AEM says to weld a bung at 36" away, think about it, wouldn't the O2 Sensor be too hot also and "shorten it's life time"? which is not true because both sensors work the same, as in measuring.. And built the same "AEm sensor is made by Bosch".. and so are some of ours who bought the Bosch one for the "Upstream" Sensor..

Wether you by AEM or any other brand just put it where they specify it because they ran many tests and made sure to where's the best place that they work the best when measuring and warming up..
 
What about all those guys running narrowband simulation with ECMlink and running their widebands in the stock o2 location? oh yea I am one of them.

I honestly don't know if there's some truth to that or not, but it seems strange to me and doesn't jive with our empirical results. I've run the WB sensor in the front O2 location on my own car for years and have had no problems, even after putting it through a LOT of hard (and HOT) road course miles.

However, there are a number of situations where you may find it easier to install the WBO2 further downstream (in the rearO2 location on a 2G, for example). The problem is that the sensor responds more slowly to ECU mixture changes the further away from the engine it's placed. As a result, the ECU makes adjustments to the A/F mixture too quickly and "overshoots", running really lean for a few seconds, then really rich, then lean, etc. "

good point there agentorange313, like i said before sensors are made the same as for the AEM WB and the regular O2 Sensor, they can both take the same heat, BOSCH makes the AEM WB sensor, and they also make the regular O2 A/F sensor for our Upstream O2 location.. But i also like to follow what big Aftermarket company like AEM recommend the way there products are used, why? because as we know AEM is a very high ranked and good company known for their good products, and they test their products such as WB function at its best heat range i guess and position.. But its up to US to follow or try something that maybe will function better for us like you have with your WB..

I like putting it in place of the stock sensor because it will look stock and if the factory puts there sensor there some engineer that knows a lot more than I do as a technician so I will try it there and see how it goes.
