So I was cruising on the highway when I geared down from 4th to 3rd, rev to match to avoid the violent engine chatter (plus I have a bad rear mount, i don't dare try reversing, sounds like the engine is about to jump out the engine bay) I get when gearing down from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd, then I went to shift up to 4th again but couldn't get into gear. So when I pulled down the transmission last night I discovered this:

Clutch problem 20110817.3GP - YouTube .

How and what the hell happened:confused:? How did the damn clutch come loose like that. I just put it in 2 months ago. It feels like it only the center piece, the outer part is still in tact between the flywheel and pressure plate.

Oooh, nice. There are a few factors here, but the prominent one that I'm thinking is that improper shift practice has led to you grinding that disk away until there was nowhere near enough material to mate the pressure to the flywheel. However this is a bit of a shot.

Another option is that you broke the center section away from the friction surface of the disk, or something is faulty with the pressure plate. Remove that pressure plate and look. It's just a few small bolts.

I dont beat her up or anything, I'm usually a very careful shifter. I have an OEM that I've been using for a year with no issues at all, Although I wonder...it's been pretty rough getting used to this thing the engagement is super sharp, I cant count the amount of time it made me look like an amateur manual driver. I hope warranty covers this. If not...that'll be the last time I even look at an ACT.

To me it looks like the springs on the disk are broken or like stated above, the center section of the disk broke off. Alot of times people let the trans hang on the clutch when they're re-installing the trans, and that damages the clutch disk. Also , theres a smaller bolt that goes from the engine to the trans behind the block right above the axle that people tend to forget and not install back when they swap out clutches/trans, and that will cause you to feel like the engine is gonna rip out of the teansmission when your taking off or on reverse .

ahhhh I see, are you talking about the bolt that goes through the dowel on the block? The dowel fell off into my hand when I pulled my tranny off. The bolt broke when tightening last time I installed the transmission:ohdamn:

Yea that bolt, its a small 12mm bolt Right above the Driverside axle . If you dont have that on it will make your tranny move "in & out" from the block .

Agreed I have trouble in the past with that 12mm bolt, it stirps out easy beacause its going into the Aluminum transmission case. Without that bolt in place the other trans bolts will eventually back themselves out and cause problems.

your lucky it didn't trash the tranny. we just had to rebuild my buddies tranny lastnight because his was doing that and it snapped the collar off where the throw out bearing rides. Not to mention it completly trashed a brand new quarter masters clutch. so we frankenstiend two trannys and he is gunna run a advanced auto clutch to make it to the shoot out

;) Initial problem found. One step in the right direction.

OEM it is then....At least now I can fix my starter plate bolt issue....both back out on two separate occasions. What if after I inspect the block I noticed that the threads are messed up would it hurt not to re-thread and install those 2 10mm bolts? I just don't see the reason to bolt it up when its being held tight between the tranny and block.....vibration reduction behind the fly wheel maybe?

I would re-thread those. you want as much security and stability in that area as possible.

I know this is old but not to long after re-installing the stock clutch I noticed the violent shaking while reversing is back and as suspected I notice this damn bolt is tripping again.....are there any tricks to solving this? I have to take down the box to re-install a brand new act street disc so I want to find out from anyone if there are any tricks you guys may know about while installing this very important (will break your clutch)bolt. Without looking in the hole and looking at the broken bolt (half way down the threaded area) I suspect that its just a broken bolt so I threw 2 washers on it and tried again but still triping. I wonder if the threads on the tranny is effed up too??.... I figure the washers would stop the bolt right before it gets to the end of the piece that broke off, that should hold it right, or is my theory is far fetched? Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

i just installed my tranny, now you guys got me trippin about my bolts LOL which bolt is this one? one that goes to the T-case? i am missing a bolt also cause its stripped very interesting

Sounds like you're going to have to remove whatever is caught in there, retap it, and get a slightly larger bolt or more aggressively threaded bolt.

Ok, there are two dowels that line the transmission up with the engine block. Well there is a smaller sized bolt that goes threw the dowel at the firewall side of the engine assembly. That's the one they are talking about.

okay, hope i didnt get anything mixed up haha thanks matt, im gonna PM you something real quick because i cant find it anywhere

Loc Tite is your friend on anything on the engine or trans due to it gets a lot of vibration. I use loc tite on about everything on my motor to make sure that they dont back out just an extra security measure.

Thanks for the input guys. After looking at the bolt sizes here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...ngth-pitch-location-part-number-pictures.html I realized that the bolt isn't broken at all so it must be the thread that is damaged (in the tranny case)or debri from the dowel and broken bolt that was taken out prior to this set. I'm hoping for debri so all I would have to do is clean it out, locktight and install. I will definetely try the bolt after I clean it to make sure, while the tranny is down.

I agree that locktight is extra security and nice at times, but on this bolt you will have no problem if it is torqued to spec from the OEM manual.

i cant find the torque specs i dont have a manual :( for the trans to block bolts im gonna guess something like 55FT lb

i have a torque specs sheet, but i dont know what the manual is calling these bolts. it just says transaxel mounting bracket etc.. which to the block it says like 22-25ftlb

Service manual says that the bolts that attach the trans to block are 35ft-lbs. But the smaller bolt in the back that we have been talking about is 22-25 ft-lbs. Set it and forget it. :hellyeah:
