For the guys that have removed the AC compressor with the engine in the car how exactly did you guys get the compressor out? I tried pulling it towards the passenger side but it will not squeeze between the motor mount bracket and intake manifold. I was thinking if jacking up the motor and taking off the rear motor mount then pulling it out of the passenger side but is all that work necessary?

No don't do that. I just took mine out in my 2g. Hopefully the 1g layout is similar. Every one told me I needed to jack up my motor and all this stuff but I didn't have to do any of that.

I wish I had a pic of the 1g bay with me but I think all this stuff is in the same place. To the drivers side of your intake manifold unbolt your brake fluid reservoir and move it toward the firewall as much as possible. Move a couple misc hoses out of the way and you are staring right down at your ac compressor. Undo all 4 bolts and lines and just lift it straight up.

You don't need to undo any hoses or mounts or anything really.

I'm on my phone so I can't look at my 1g stuff so I'm sure someone will chime in if stuff is really different. It only took me about 15 minutes though and I have never done any work on that part of the car before. It's actually a lot smaller than it seems...

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the reply! I will definitely try to wiggle it out before I attempt anything else! I think the difference is the rear motor mount on a 1g the rear motor mount is closer to the AC compressor. As where the 2g rear motor mount is on the transmission.

After you move the hoses and unbolt the reservoir (don't undo the lines just move it over) it will be very easy to tell if the mount is going to be in the way. There is nothing else back there so it's really easy to see everything and what kind of room you need.

It was definitely a wiggle to get it out but it was not difficult at all by any means. Just use a wrench on the bolts to make your life easier. Point the wrench long ways toward the passenger side for the bottom bolts. It's a lot easier than trying to fit a socket down there.

Thanks for the help! Ill be sure to try that!

i dont think the 1g has as much room as the 2g. I mean if you support the motor and have to take the rear mount out it not that big of a deal if you weigh out the option of wiggling it or forcing though some areas and end up messing other parts up(wires or hoses).

I just did this yesterday on my 90... You need to move the vacuum line out of the way, being lazy and not wanting to disconnect all the hoses I unbolted the bracket with the three solenoids from the firewall disconnected the harness and flipped the assembly over onto the valve cover. Second I unplugged the ignition puck and moved the harness out of the way. Lastly I unbolted the master cylinder from the booster so I could push it, just slightly, out of the way without bending the lines. I also unplugged the plug wires from the coil pack and moved them out of the way just to be safe. I didn't have to disconnect the fuel return line.

With all these preparations I was able to pull the compressor out and slip the Saturn alternator down... Basically it can be done.

After a couple hours playing with the compressor and inspecting ways to get it out I found the easiest way was just do undo the passenger side vacuum lines from the intake manifold brace. Then I disconnected the 3 harnesses that mount to the intake manifold brace. I then took the 3 bolts off that secure the intake manifold brace. I pulled it towards the timing belt side. Then I turned the pulley of the A/C compressor towards the passenger side and pushed it as close to the firewall as I could. I then wiggled it past the rear motor mount and slid it out. Took a little effort but once the pulley cleared the motor mount then the rest of the pump slid right out!

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm curious and need 10 more tech posts to rid myself of this Newbie status  Does the belt on the A/C compressor run anything else? I removed my A/C but still have the compressor installed with the belt running. I want to remove it this weekend. I'm assuming it does not, but just want to make sure. Thanks

You are correct in assuming it only runs that, it only runs from the crank to the a/c so your fine in taking it off as many of us do and leave the compressor in
