I have done search on people doing the A/T to M/T swap, and tho there is not as much detailed information on the 2g. What I really want to know is, from people who have done it, do they feel it was worth it? I am really looking at doin it, but before i did i just wanted to make sure that the people that did it were satisfied with the results.

On another note, for a 2g, is there any specific parts that isnt mention in Vfaqs i should know about, and is the wiring really different like some people claim in there posts.

My goals are to be more of a road course/touring car, that is still street driven.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

I have done the swap on my NT, and it was definitely worth it. I actually just got finished w/it about a month or so ago, and I still haven't figured out the speedometer, but I am, however, going to get a m/t ECU, which I think will solve the problem. It really isn't that hard to do the swap, and I know everywhere you look you will read the pedals are the hardest part...but that's not hard at all....just a little tedious. I just used a dremel and a drill and had the pedal installed about an hour...maybe a little more. The wiring is easy.

If you decide to do the swap, just email me at [email protected] with any questions and I'll be more than happy to assist you in whatever you need!

Thx crankin for the reply, Im porbly goin to do it in a month or so. Im just savin up the rest of the money. Keep an eye out for some questions in ur mail box cuz im sure ill get some, expetually with the wiring.

Automatics suck. I'm passionate about my hate for automatics. In my opinion, swapping to a manual is worth any pain and suffering involved. :thumb:

Hey guys, I'm new here but figured this is as good a place as any to start posting.

I am planning on doing the AT/MT in July i've been talking to the junk yard and there watching for a tranny for me. only thing i'm wondering is i do don'thave a lift so i'm trying to figure out how high off the ground i need to get the car to drop the tranny.
You guys that have done it can you give me some ideas?
Thanks.

I have done the A/T to M/T swap. It's in my n/a Spyder GS but it is the same as the turbo. I have had mine done for about 3 months now and I think it was definitely worth it. No doubt in my mind. As far as the ECU swap, there is no need for that cause the ECU's are the same. There is a TCU for the transmission.

Thanks for the info.
what did you pay for your tranny?
I've seen a couple for 500 at a junk yark. is that a fare price?

Chad, I may be doing this swap this summer as well. I bookmarked this thread that I thought was interesting regarding the swap for a 2g:

Let me know when you start the swap...I'd be interested to hear how it goes!

I'm curious about this too. The automatic tranny is pretty huge.

It's going to be interesting. my buddy just finished his degree in auto mechanics at the local tech college and he said he'll help me so that gives me a good leg up to start with.

When i do it i'm going to document everything and take step by step pictures for all who are interested in doing it them selfs.

I'll keep ya'll posted.
Chad.

well im glad to see a post like this. My auto trans just took a dumb :notgood: went threw its 3 tcase (recall) and then it would't ingauge. So Im going to have the shell poped open to see whats scrambled inside, if it cant be rebuilt, Im doing the 5spd swap as well, I have a list of things that i got from a post awile ago, Is there any thing missing?

1.) Transmission (W5M33)
2.) Transfer Case
3.) Rear end (pumpkin, diff, whatever)
4.) Top trans mount "shoe" (cast aluminum piece), with nuts & bolts
5.) Rear trans bracket, nuts & bolts
6.) Flywheel (must be a AWD Flywheel)
7.) Flywheel bolts
8.) Clutch
9.) Pressure plate bolts
10.) Engine/trans separator plate with bolts
11.) Clutch Slave Cylinder
12.) Clutch Slave Cylinder Bolts
13.) Clutch Line (if can be provided) or RRE’s Stainless Braided Clutch Line
14.) Clutch Master Cylinder with nuts & bolts
15.) Clutch Master Cylinder Reservoir Cup
16.) Clutch Pedal Assembly (with all switches and springs), with nuts & bolts
17.) Brake Pedal Assembly (with all switches and springs), with nuts & bolts
18.) Shifter Cables (with boot for firewall)
19.) Shifter Assembly
20.) Shift Boot
21.) Shift Knob
22.) Front Axles
23.) Backup light harness plug (will be plugged in Manual Tranny, just cut wires as long as possible)
24.) Speed Sensor (should be mounted already in tranny)
25.) MT Starter

Good list ^^^ Hell yeah its worth the swap did mine and a 6bolt swap at the same time.

One thing to note is the rear CV shafts on the auto pumpkin and manual pumpkin are different and you need to replace both. ABS and non ABS are the same. Its a simple swap nothing to intense. There are 3 versions of the MT I am told and there are 3 versions of shift cables as well you need to match them.

The swap is straight forward but its easiest to get a parts car forsure. I bought a complete rolling shell with a blown motor, that had caught fire and was pretty much junk under the hood besides the drivetrain and interior which was allI wanted. I swapped everything from one to the other pretty easy. You will also really hate having to find all the hardware if you don't find a parts car by the time you buy all the special fasterners etc you will go nuts.

Finally, an awd auto to manual swap!

I've been interested in doing this on my '95 gsx for quite awhile, but haven't found a thread with someone doing the swap on an awd. There's a couple of things I'm wondering about though. One, is the swap on a awd vechile much more complex than on a fwd and if there is a guide for the awd swap out there somewhere? Two, how do you tell if your vechile is a 5 bolt, 6 bolt, or 7bolt? Is this the difference between 1g's, 2ga's and 2gb's?

thanks for anyone's help.
darren

2g's are 7bolts, unless you did the swap to a 6bolt (1g engine) Awd requires more because of the rearend/axles, tcase. Awd is the same guide, just the rear is a big issue, just out and in, but every thing else is the same, good luck, Im going to setup a blog for when i start, ill keep people posted :thumb:

If the car is already AWD whats the problem? Change the rear CV shafts change the trans change the Tcase. Same everything else. The drive shaft is the same.

Man I havent gotten around to checkin this thread in a while, thx tylerk for the link, I had been lookin for somethin like that when i posted my original. Im definatly doing it, my only problem is it got put on hold do to that fact I burnt out my piston rings. So im rebuilding the block right now. Wish i could do it while I got the block pulled apart but straped for cash.

I have a 99, is it tru that in order for it to work i have to find a parts car thats a 98 or 99. I dont know how much truth there is to it but thats what I had heard.

Well im gonna keep checkin back, Hope to see full reports from those of you who are gonna do it, that way i can kinda learn from what you guys did ;) LOL.

yeah i found a 97 trans, but not sure, its the same number W5M33 so im not sure

Hey, grimis what u mean by its the same number, and its not just the trany we have to swap, dont we have to do the engine mount to the tranny, and half shafts. as well as the shifter assembly( shifter assembly is given) LOL .

what i mean by the number is, does the 97/98/99's awd have the same number?? thats what i mean. And right now im stupmed, my car "WAS" dead, would't shift into drive, low or 2nd, but i drove it home   so im looking for an AWD auto trans at the moment, save me some cash.....

I was told when doing the swap that you need a 95-96 trans and Tcase and rear diff they all have to match and 97-99 they have to match from same years. Im not 100% on this but you might want to look into it farther. For me my car was a 95 TSi AWD as was the donor so no ??? for me.

Im very confused on this part, I have a Gs-T. Whats the difference in the trannies by year? I'm guessing the tranny is going to be different with the six-bolt, but what about the seven-bolt? Is it just the tranny mount locations or elcrical sensors? For a '99 is it true I have to stick with '97-99? And any of the differences, can they be over come?
I am getting a '92-94 Gs (i can tell becuz it's a 1gen with no flip-up lights, even though I have not yet been told the exact yr) for free. I plan on getting the head , intake manifold, Throttle body, and all other salvagable parts that may benefit me. So what I was wondering is that if I could use the tranny. Because if its just something like Tranny mounts wouldnt I be able to make a bracket, or change somethin?

Any help appreciated, thx

Well, you have two items that you need to check right off the bat. First, is the starter hooked up and working properly. Secondly, you have a switch on the clutch pedal that needs to be hooked up properly. In other auto to manual switch overs, it was as simple as wiring up the old "drive" switch from the auto (making it so that you can't start the car unless it is in park or neutral) to the clutch pedal swtich.

Good luck. Scott
