A/T Parts in Pan - But from where?

Symptoms:

"Out of the blue... only has reverse..and 1-2. As soon as second gets about to it's shift point it just goes into nothing..,like you pop it in neutral. Then as you coast it will grab second at about 25 mph again. The gears that do work are smooth and shift fine.The problem just came on instantly."

So I pulled the pan and found this:

After staring at the bottom of the valve body for an hour I finally spotted something rattling around above it. After pulling it off, I found another pin, and (what I believe to be) a piece busted off of this:

Yay!

WTF? Can anyone identify these parts?

What's incredible is that we've been driving on short trips almost every day.

Anyone know what might of caused this? This was a rebuilt maybe 5 years old, driven daily by a lead footed hard-head woman.

The band is the parking band. Those parts are used to actuate the parking brake.

By looking at all the metal flakes in the pan your going to need a rebuild. The clutch bands are probably shot.

+1 A rebuild is in your future.
At one point mine was not wanting to shift into the higher gears either. Needed all the clutch packs replaced. Given the extra parts floating around in the pan, a new valve body wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Much of the rubble you see in that pan are whats left of a smashed magnet. How it got smashed- idk.

So yup she's toast.

I can't tell from the exploded (the irony) diagram how the band and the pin come together. I guess its not too important at this point.

I'm getting a cramp in my neck just thinking about all the fun I'm in store for.

I feel your pain man, I think I might be in the auto transmission rebuild business over the winter. If you can get on ECMLinks forums there is a lot of good info.

the pieces in the picture look like shift valves in your trans valve body. that could def be the cause of your randon and crappy shifting.
