A/T AWD question

My new tsi awd is my first awd vehicle, and I've never experienced this on my fwd DSMs, automatic or manual. When I let off the gas and am coasting downhill, it feels like the car downshifts, as if I dropped it into low gear. It kind of freaks me out because my fwd a/t doesn't do this. The tranny was replaced about 600 mi ago, and I just recently replaced the xcase due to a leaking input shaft seal which destroyed the bearings. This was happening before that, and doesn't feel like when the xcase seized up on me. Is this normal, and if not what else could it be?

Does it clunk or jerk or anything along those lines or does it just deccelerate? Do the rpms go up? Need you to describe it better.

It's normal. It's because you have the x case and the rear diff to slow you down. It puts resistance on the drivetrain in a since. But we would need a better description to give you a more accurate answer.

You might also check your fluid level in the tranny. If you are too low, the shift forward in fluid could rob the system making it unable to hold the gear. Since you have a 2g, your auto tranny will have the lockout TC, fluid loss could cause it to unlock, which will feel like a downshift.

My 97 at awd talon a/t does the same thing and looking for answers as well. For me when I'm down hill it downshift and its at high rpm. Never had clunking till a week ago. Clucking only happens at cruise sound like a flat tire and my wheel going to pop off I checked under the car and notice my passanger side axel boot is shot and my tie rod end bushing also passenger side. Im hoping is that and not diffs. But thump like sounds like its coming from driver side. Only on cruise if I boost it goes away once im off and it starts. Will be watch this thread. As far as my issue, the at fluid level is fine, and there's no clunking, just feels like it's downshifting especially on a downhill coast. Obviously this produces a slight jerk, as if I was dropping into 2nd or low gear. The rpms jump to about 2k.

Only notice my car downshift like that when in a huge hill and usually when running low on gas
