Hey everyone this is my first post and I hope you guys don't get too angry with me. I have spent about an hour and a half looking for "free mods or first mods" basically I just bought my first GST and it is bone stock. It has 84k on it and I would like to spend in the $2000-$4000 range in doing some upgrades. Can I get some suggestions with what I should be doing/looking for? I was thinking of putting on a different exhaust and an intake but don't even know what to be looking for. Thanks again everyone and if you know where there is a similar post can you give me a link because I had no success finding it.

when using the search bar, where it says "All posts" change it to titles only then put in first mods or whatever you want and hit search. that usually gives you better results. plan on doing allot of reading and ill tell you right now to make sure that all your maintenance is up to date

thanks a lot guys... belts were just replaced. oil changed air filter changed. plugs and wires... oh yeah and i think there needs to be a preventative maintenance section drove the car home (4 miles) and then further inspected to find a mouse nest on the manifold.

ill start on the free mods section and work my way up thanks alot again.

With that being said, it sounds like it set for a long time. Are you 100% sure the belts were changed? The only reason we ask is that if it goes then instead of using that money on upgrades, you will be using it on repairs.

hey guys im sorry my dad has changed the timing belt before in gm models but says he doesnt want to do it in the eclipse... (is it that different) so i guess i was going to look around for prices. what does this normally cost (might as well have them replace the balance shaft belt also) also can i take it to a regular auto shop in town or to the dealer. the guy in town has done engine and tranny fixes for me but i dont kno if he gets a lot of imports in there. thanks again guys

I had my timing belt and waterpump done by English Racing in Washington for around $400... Also I would just have the balance shafts removed, and never have to change that belt again, the balance shaft belt is a ticking time bomb.. I would really try to find someone around you that has worked on a 4g63 motor before. Dealer is expensive.

tell your old man to grow some and get to it! honesty its not too different than any other DOHC 4 cylinder than ive done. Spend a few extra bucks and delete the balance shaft. also make sure you change the water pump tensioner pulley and tensioner. while you have the motor apart that far it would be a good time to throw in a MLS head gasket and some ARP head studs.

he is just crabby because he just took apart my sisters neon and did that timing belt... just got the call back on a quote for them to replace both belts, pulleys, tensioner, waterpump, "your going to wish u didnt have the turbo it is going to be double labor 8 hour job, probably looking at $1000 with parts and labor."

If you have the tools and time, do it yourself with the help of a chilton, haynes, and VFAQ.com. Be patient and have attention to detail. As others have mention before in other threads, If you own a DSM you better get used to working on it or it maybe jack stand racing lot.

Honestly, doing the timing belt for the first time is intimidating, but following guides and vfaqs makes it commom sense. I'm saving up for a weekend to do mine, and if you plan on modding this car I would get used to turning a wrench and following instructions. Should be no more than a 4 hour job, the turbo makes no difference in timing components. Don't rush and triple check your work, half-assing is what gave us the "un-reliable" name.

As far as mods, Ebay for the intake before the turbo, get a 1g BOV for now or I would recommend NGR, FMIC is pretty pointless with the T25 turbo but possible(look into VRSF).
Gauges are great to have also, usually Boost/Vac., Oil Pressure (stock one is sub-par) and an air-fuel ratio wideband(don't waste your money on a narrow-band.)
Ebay again for the exhaust, unless you feel like dropping a lot of cash on name brand system.
MBC AFTER you get an aftermarket boost gauge(at the minimum.)

Welcome to 'Tuners!

^ Great tips here. There are guys here that know how to drop the trans in like 15-20 minutes and guys that can do a timing job within a blink of an eye. Once you start working on these cars and get a feel of what the cars look like and there nomenclatures, you will be able to do anything you put your mind to.

thanks guys lots of great tips for me. my brother-in-law is now an enemy because he is all "honda love" but i might have a buddy that can work on it with me... i have done brakes, plugs control arm bushings, and other odds and ends on a GM, but never anything with motor or tranny. i have been watching graveyards vids on the timing belt and reading quite a bit just wish the old mechanic would support me in wanting to take part in the timing...

also with the exhaust im having troubles finding a turbo back exhaust, i plan on going headers back because luckily my county has no emissions. you guys might have some more knowledge too. if i bought a cat-back would the down pipe be the connection from the headers to the cat-back or just keep searching to find a turbo-back exhaust

Ebay catback exhaust works good on 4g63 applications such as APEXI or N1. What you are thinking is a "HEADER" is a tubular turbo manifold. These can be found on ebay as well but tend to crack after long periods of heat up and cool down.

Extreme PSI has some nice ones HERE

There is no "header" on a turbo car, it's called a manifold..Your looking for turbo back exhaust..While your at it I would get a bigger o2 housing..

The FP cast race maifold is pretty cheap..

Here is a good guide to follow on this type of stuff

RRE 2nd Generation Eclipse Upgrade Path

Personally I would say get ECMLINK and Eprom your ecu. Then get a boost gauge, 3" Exhaust with Down Pipe, k&N air filter adapter.

If you havent yet and your looking to upgrade SAFELY change the spark plugs and put a little into maintenence.

Also remember you can either be Fast, Reliable, or Cheap. Go ahead and pick your two now ha
