i have just recently purchased a 1995 eagle talon tsi awd turbo 5-speed.. the previous owner had just had a new clutch installed.. he told me that it needed a new starter. i purchased the new starter and now installed.. it does not fully engage the flywheel.. is there ne one who might be able to help me with this problem.. any help at all would be appreciated

all it is doing is grinding.. its like the started isnt fully enagaging the flywheel.. im pretty certain im going to have to get a new flywheel.. this is the 2nd new starte and have had the same problem with both

Did you make sure to get the correct starter? auto ones are slightly different from the manual ones, and they won't engange the flywheel completely.

ive bought starts from advance and autozone both, with both starters part numbers being what they say is for a manual tranny

I wish there was an easy way to take a peek at what is going on to cause the starter not to grip. I'm afraid you may have to at the very least pull the tranny back off the block enough to inspect the flywheel. You may need a new flywheel but something sounds strange here.

Before doing the above you may want to try spinning the motor via the crank pulley with a 1/2 wrench to turn the flywheel to a different position. Maybe the teeth in the area that the starter is trying to grab are broken/stripped? Which would be incredibly weird but at least you know what is happening before you do the work to pull the trans. So just rotate the flywheel via that method then try and start the car to see if there are any other results.

Another thing that could be happening is that the starter splines are binding withe the flywheel and not allowing the solenoid to push the starter splines all the way out.. This is a long shot but worth listing.

If anyone opposes to these methods or has a better idea as to what is wrong please chime in.

UPDATE: Check this thread out, I was really curious about this being the issue so i did a little search after initially posting this response. Apparently this guy solved an issue that sounds similar to yours, he stopped posting after finding out that he didn't have a starter plate and resulted to trying washers on the starter bolts for a solution.

If that post doesn't do it for you then you can read this post. One of the member confirms that they had the same issue until they pulled the trans and put the starter plate back on it.

Seeing as how you've just purchased your car, the previous owner (or one of the previous owners) may not have put the starter plate back on the car. If you're picky you might want to drop the trans, unbolt the flywheel and put one on, if not then you could probably get away with using washers to back the starter wheel/splines away from the flywheel enough.

the flywheel is brand new.. i put the car back on a lift and took the dust shield off the bottom side of the tranny.. the flywheel teeth are fine.. all 106 of them.. and its not a problem of the starter gear not coming out far enough,, they are coming out too far and goign past the flywheel teeth jamming into the flywheel past the teeth causing it tu jump the teeth

Can you try adding a washer or two to the starter bolts to see if it backs it up far enough for it to align right.

ive got washer in now as shims and it was starting but it bounced to far off again

I was going to suggest adding another washer but this is getting to be too much rigging to make this work properly. I would suggest looking at the threads that I posted earlier and buying a starter plate to put on there. You will have to take the trans/flywheel off for that but at least you'll know its the proper way that its supposed to be and not rigged.

If it had of worked with 1 washer then fine but I wouldn't go beyond 2 washers and even then it would make me feel uneasy (that's just me though).

Check to see if you have a starter plate on there first, then post your findings.

i have a brand new starter plate on it.. i just reinstalled tranny and everything bought a new starter plate and put it on at the same time

So just to be clear you have a 2g starterplate installed behind the flywheel.

Another question, Is the transmission completely flush and bolted to the block? Can you double check that its not pushed off in the slightest and completely flush with the block, not crooked, backed off, and that the dowl pin towards the front of the block is inserted completely into the trans bell housing. The halfshaft from the drivers side is all the way in (only if its an AWD model).

If none of the above fixes the issue then please take as many pictures are you can showing the starter gear wear, the trans thats bolted on, if you can see anything exposing the flywheel behind the motor where the starter would go please take a picture of that too then post them.

will do.. yes i have a 2g starter plate installed behind the flywheel. transmission is flush with the block.. no gaps and no loose bolts anywhere. dowl pins are completely into the trans, half shaft axle is all the way in place.. i have went over the car 100 times in the last 3 days trying to figure this out.. im out of ideas on what to check. but i will take as many pictures tomorrow as possible.. i was also take pictures of the flywheel i just took out of it

Ok, whatever you do just promise that when we figure with out, you will post the fix.

yes i am sure it is the correct starter plate... came from the mistu dealership.. and i will post the fix.. going to try another new starter,, maybe this one got damage before i put the new flywheel in.. the car started probably 20 times.. but now it doesnt sound like the bendix is engaging the flyhweel at all so i think the starter might be damaged

problem is fixed.. it actually turned out to be a warp in the starter plate make everything bind up.. took it back off hammered it back flat, re installed and presto.. she started right up.. now i have a throttle cable issue.. LOL.. can anyone tell me if there is a way to adjust how tight or loose the throttle cable is?
