95 eclipse shifter spring tension problem

I disassembled my shifter the other day to install a symborski kit and I had to take the shifter spring out to complete the installation. When I took out the spring it had tension and it popped off when i was disassembling it. The spring isn't broke but when I try to re install the shifter and put the spring back on there is no tension and I have no clue how to put tension back in the spring. If anybody could help me that would be great.
