Hey All,

I have a 94 talon, 2.0 esi. It was my sister's for a while and she's the type to say "it's a transmission problem!!" and after careful examination you say "no, it needs gas" so it has not been well maintained. I am having trouble getting it up and running. It's been sitting for a while, I put in a new clutch and clutch slave cylinder (the master looks new), put it back together and it won't turn on. The starter would kick out and spin and the engine would TRY but would not turn over. I tried starter fluid in the intake and making sure all connections/fuses etc. were good and realized the bell housing ground was not connected to the - battery end. I connected it, and now you can hear the metallic click of the starter kick out, but nothing else. I went to a local mechanic who gave me the ignition wiring diagram and I don't understand it b/c

1. Says that the thermostat housing is grounded to the - bat instead of the transmission being grounded to the - side of battery. However the wiring from the thermostat is in the harness and looks like it goes to the + side of bat. Plus I can't see where else the transmission ground would go.

2. Says there is a 80amp fuse in the engine compartment relay box (I think it's for the alternator) however on my vehicle there is no 80am fuse on the map or in the fuse box.

Maybe the body is 94 and the engine/wiring is another year?

If anyone has the wiring diagrams for a 93 or a 95 so I can check I would love to see them.

I am an amateur and barely understand what I'm doing, any advice would be awesome.

thanks, melissa

The battery minus should have 2 large cables on it. One goes to the firewall body and a separate cable to under one of the STARTER mounting bolts (on the bell housing). The 80A fuse (screw in type) should be right next to the battery's + cable in a small box.

Thank you, will check now.

I had it hooked up correctly according to your description, however I still don't see any 80amp fuses, screw in or otherwise. Will keep looking but definitely not in the fuse box.

1. My battery is on the driver side, just to be clear.

2. The wiring diagram I have is prodemand system wiring diagrams, starting/charging for a 1994 Eagle Talon, 2.0, Eng ES. It definitely has the battery grounded to the firewall and to the thermostat housing. Maybe b/c the thermostat is on the block (sort of) it could be considered grounded to the transmission/starter bolt?

3. Pulled the starter out and it looks like it's fine, spins okay, etc. going to clean and put it all back and let you know.

It started no problem after the cleaning!! Still don't know about the diagram, I just went w/ common sense (to the best of my ability!) and took all connections apart, re-cleaned, re-tightened, and voila :)

The largest current that flows is to the starter which is why you want the battery negative to be on a starter mounting bolt (least resistance). [The thermostat is electrically connected to the starter casing but it has to go through many bolts and part junctions to get there which all add resistance.]

Follow the alternator's large power output wire(s). It should go to the 80A fuse (or whatever the largest fuse is in your model/year car).

Battery is on the drivers side? Hummm. I don't have a 1gNT (90-94) but I thought it was still on the passenger side. 2gNT (95-99) is on the drivers side.

Thanks all, the sticker does say June of 1994, but maybe that's just for the body? Still has a few issues but am working them out. Will follow the alternator cable and see what comes up.

Thanks for all the help. Will try to post pics today.

okay, some basic photos to give you an idea.

Yes it is a 2g (the 2gNT started in 94).
Your battery connections don't look very solid (how the wires connect into the terminal) - especially the negative one. That could easily be a no starter cranking problem (high resistance there drops too much voltage for starter to work properly).

thanks, understand and will redo connections.

other problem, metal grinding when trying to start. going to have to lower the transmission again and do this myself. I don't think it's aligned correctly. initially when I started it there was metallic clanging but when I pressed the clutch it stopped, now it begins when I try to start it. My boyfriend and other friend did the heavy lifting putting the clutch and tran back together and up in b/c I felt a little weak caring for kids and all, now I'm feeling like I should have waited and done it in my own time. ....wahwahwah, back to the drawing board. At least now I know what 2g is. thanks luv2rallye and eclipse folks. I'm going to get on your level over the next 5yrs.

ps. love the electricity lessons from you b/c I love the stuff, just don't feel confident in my understanding. appreciated!!
