93 Laser.. Questions

A friend of mine Is selling a 93 laser non turbo 5 speed, for $2800

he says it has a rebult trans with a centerforce clutch and stuff

he said he rebuilt the head and put in new 2g pistons or somthing like that

I have no experience with these cars

Ive heard that there garbage, and that the heads always blow whether racing or regular driving


He also took out the power steering pump and stuff and put in the manual rack

What are common problems with these cars?

what goes wrong the most, and after how long?

Does the head blow from over revving easily or does it just blow for no reason.

id like as much info as possible

Well, I can give you some opinions...

First off, how long this car lasts you depends heavily on how competant a engine builder your friend is. If he knew what he was doing and put everthing together properly and to spec, then nothing major *should* happen. How many miles are on this car also? $2800 seems kinda pricey for a non-turbo. I'm guessing the miles aren't low considering both the head and tranny got rebuilt already.

With the high rev'ing nature of these cars, as long as you check your oil often, and change it religiously these cars can last long periods of time as daily drivers. This should answer the question about the head blowing for no reason. If you keep good clean oil in the motor with good oil pressure you will have no heads blowing...

One last thing, if your friend who worked on the car didn't change the timing belt, you might as well do that first thing. You dont want that thing to break after all the tranny\head rebuilding. This is a very common thing to go wrong!

lo, new timing belt, new water pump, just hit 101K, stage 1 turbo trix trans rebuild, comp racing 101 cams, hks valves and retainers, apex i superground pace setter header, new head gasket, new balanshaft belt , cam seals, injen cold air, taylor 8.5 wires and ngk plugs, couple more things here and their, IM the SELLER

o and the head didnt blow, i just built it up, car never blew, nothing ever cracked, the only thing i ever NEEDED to fix on this was the alternator, and i have all reciepts...

Honestly... save your money. If your going to spend 2800 bucks, either make it a turbo or get something more reliable. Just the fact that the guy says it has 2g pistons tells me to stay far, far away.

i said the guy i bought it from said that, im not claiming anything on that fact, i know what i did.. and the fact i have slips for 15.3, and 15.4 and blows no smoke and leaks knowhere under the hood... so this thread should close at that..

this whole deal of, well the guy said makes me already weairy, theres no paper proof. I can say that my lifted show truck jeep cherokee does 11sec 1/4 too when it actually takes probly 20 .

Anyway i would stay FAR away from this car. Sounds like a sketchy deal, 2800 for n/t is very stupid, if you buy this thing you wont be happy since n/t is slow and civic Sis will shit on you daily
