Hello,

I am from your guys sister site(WRXtuners.com) and was looking at buying a project car. That being said I have found a pretty good deal on a 92 GSX, clean body very few dents and scratches, great interior for only $1000. The engine has recently been rebuilt and had a new clutch and timing belt installed but is lacking a little work. The guy that owns said that it only needed turbo seals and the silent drive fixed. What can you guys tel me about this year of car, things to look for and such. I recently helped my friend perform a silent drive delete on his 88 Conquest. Is the silent drive similar to that or is it needed? The car has 192000 original miles. I hope I have listed everything that would be needed to help me out. Thanks for you help.

I think the silent drive your reffering to is the Balance shafts. if they need to be fixed, then the alot of work needs to be done to the car. Most likely the BS bearing spun inside the block, and made some problems. Your going to need a BS elim kit, and re-do timing and everything like that. If your a first timer at a DSM better give yourself at least 2 days to do it right. Take a look here for info on the BS elim kit.

drive it, make sure it builds boost,
check if the tranny grinds gears, which it probably does
i beleive some early 92 cars came with 6 bolts
thats all i can think of

If it needs the balance shafts fixed, Don't drive it. Do you know how easily w/ a dead BS the BS belt can slip off, then get trapped in the T-belt, causing the belt to skip, and bend valves?

well the problem is, it is undrivable as it sits. I need to put the urbo back on and the guy did say the BS bearings went out so, I guess that is what you guys were talking about. Now knowing this, is this worth 1G? He said he rebuilt the engine, but I cant figure out why he didnt fix or elim the BS wile he was in there. How much do I have to tear into the car to do the BS elim kit(havnt checked link out yet but getting ready to)?

Edit: The link shows pretty much what we did on the Conquest so that is pretty easy.

OK I have pretty much decided that I want to buy the car. Question is, is the link you posted the best way to get the parts for the BS elim kit or is there a site that sells everything together already?

Edit:
I found this link and was wondering how many people ahve done this or if this is the best route.

ok so I have alittle more information about the car and I wanted to ask about it.

I went over to the guys hou last weekend to see if he would let me re-install the turbo just to start the car, let it warm up and check for leaks after it was warmed up. He told me that he didnt care but the Balance Shaft was leaking oil and leaked most of the oil out. then he told me that the Balance shaft(prior to rebuild) had destoryed one of the "bearings" that The BS went through and had wobbled enough to wear something down and cause the leak. then he told me about when he puts the new "bearings" in that he had to JB weld one of them in place due to the wear caused by the BS.

The bearings I know are basically a sleve with a oil hole or something in it. Would I need to worry about the bearing coming loose and JBweld flying into other parts of the engine? Would the BS elim Kit help stop the oil leak?

The guy also pointed out that there was a slight oil leak on the head(I think). Said that it was in a spot where a gasket went so he couldnt JB weld it but put everything back together anyways. HE said I could get someone that could weld Aluminum to fix the small crack.

Knowing this now is this car still worth the 1000 I was originally going to give him? I was already on planing to send the turbo to deadbolt for a rebuild and port and polish and was going to install the BS elim kit. That will get me up to 1350 once I get it all completed. I am very worried about this reliance on JB weld though as a cure all.

Also I was reading about how to tell if my car is a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt. I read the part about checking the oil pan. if it is a 6 bolt, is the head something I could swap out with say a 2G or what?

thanks in advance.

Jb Welds maximum temp. is 600 degrees F, you can use that information at your own discretion. I dont think its going to hold up very well. Yes, you can put a 2g head on a 6 bolt block.

ok my next question is, the bearing that he JB welded in, Could I just remove it sincve there is no longer any need for the bearing or the oil to lubricate the balance shaft.

Also Still needing to know if the BS elim will help me with the oil leaking portion.

Bring 800 or maybe even lower in cash to offer him. I doubt hed refuse it.

I already talked him down from 1400, but I figured I would bring the 1000 and offer 800 first and see what he says. :)

what kind of condition is the rest of the car? if the rest of the car is real clean then 800 maybe 1000 sounds OK. But otherwise for a grand it sounds like this car has a pretty good amount of work ahead of it, aside from not really knowing what other ingenious fixes this guy came up with (jb weld etc)

Just to put it into perspective in the past i purchased a turbo fwd laser with a bad tranny for 500 bucks, after a 350 dollar junkyard tranny the car was in very good running condition i drove it for quite awhile before selling it with no problems. I currently own a 90 TSI AWD i picked up for 1500 in excellent running condition, and very good condition cosmetically. needed nothing to get it running,I currently drive it all the time. What i'm trying to say is, deals come up, just never when you're looking, if this car seems like it might be a little shaky, just pass on it and wait for the next one to come up.

EDIT: i re-read the first post in which you stated the condition of the car, if it's a 92 in as good condition as you say, then even i can see the appeal if you can get it for 1k or under,

thatis just the thing they guy has not had it back on the road since he "rebuilt it". I am kinda leary but I am afraid it just might be a simple fix like BS elim and turbo rebuild. The seats are in great condition and the head liner might need to be replaced/fixed but the rest is good to go.
