hi i bought my first dsm car a 91 talon tsi 2.0L automatic 148000 km's i had to replace the O/D clutches but at an idle it sputters and runs rough (not surging) and does not stall out it is running on all cylinders but when i hit the gas it takes forever to accelerate does not hesitate won't even spin the tires on dirt any ideas? the car was sitting for about 2 years

yeah it could probably use a tune up i don't think the fuel filter has ever been changed also when inspecting the timing belt it sits 1 or 2 teeth off on the exhaust side would that make a difference? however i will change plugs, wires, and all filters thanx :)

That would be a huge difference. Having timing off that much (if 2 teeth) may have bent a valve or 3....

Sitting for 2 years is never a good thing. You may have bad gas. Sounds like you need to do all maint. on the car as if you just bought it and nothing has ever been done to it so, that means changing all fluids, belts, and plugs/wires. Normally wires would be ok but, sitting that long, it could have oxidation and give problems like you would see on a battery's positive side. Change all hoses as well as most are probably dry-rotted by now. It would be good to change the thermostat as well.

Once you get everything that is bad/potentially bad changed, if it still runs bad, can deal with that then.

is it possible to change or at least reset the timing belt without pulling the motor? i will do that after i try every thing else all the maintenance i will let you know when i am done i bought the car for 700 dollars i can afford to put a bit more into it thanx :)

ok i changed the plugs, wires, oil, fuel filter and timing and still the same problem i even put a cold air intake
however when i checked the turbo before putting the cold air unit on i decided to try to spin the turbo by hand the question i have is is the wheel supposed to be tight or should i be able to spin it with my fingers while it is still in the car because i can't it wont budge by hand do should i look at a new or rebuilt turbo? if so i would like to get rid of this 13b and get a 14 instead any other ideas

thank you :)

i just pulled my turbo it is shot anyone know where i can get my hands on a 14b-16g for my 91 talon?
im in b.c. canada
thank you

Welcome to the community. the teeth being off will cause your ruff idle. That does need to be fixed. Its a simple job but I would suggest you get some one knowledgeable to walk you through it or have a shop do it. I would also heavily suggest you replace the belt. With the turbo I would go to craigslist or search the classifieds. no one will post here on this thread that they can sell you one because it is against the rules. do the tune up man. Seriously most guys ruin their first dsm because of lack of maintenance and pushing it to much without maintenance. Have a good one and remember you get what you pay for.

so i found another 13b turbo installed it WOW what a difference in power but it still idles rough however i noticed when changing my air filter both the large and small honeycombs on my mas air were removed would that make a difference? the timing belt was done by the way i am taring my hair out LOL thanks

Best bet, get a used maf off this site, don't get it from a junk yard. Buy a boost leak tester while your at it, this simple tool will save you many headaches. By the way listen to everyone on here who is telling you to do your maintenance, many expensive problems can be fixed by doing cheap maintenance when it's needed, yours is needed bad.

Hope everything works out for you.
