I have a 1990 Plymouth Laser turbo MTX. i just got it recently. Over the past few days I havnt noticed anything other than it will sometimes bog and die after sitting at idle, or may start, bog and immediatly die. and that wasnt too often. The other day I went out, hopped in pressed the clutch and turned the key,.. nothing. Just a click, and then an electrical hum. So i thought, Starter. I replaced that, and now it will make a grind noise when i try to start it like the starter is spinning but not starting the car. the only things I can think of now are the battery or the alternator, but i dont think that because all items inside the car seem to work fine and have no power bog. the only other thing i could think is the fuel pump or something to deal with spark. anyone had this problem or know what it is? checked the bolts on the alternator, they are tight. The connections to the alt is fine. did they have 2 different starters? one for N/A cars and one for turbo cars? what about one for manual and one for auto? I think if they are different I may have gotten one for an N/A instead of the Turbo model. also, what is this connector to? My friends talon has it taped to the harness and not connected, but he is N/A and mine is not.

shouldnt be hard to find where that plug goes. unlike hondas our wireing harness have all slightley plugs. just follow the harness and find where its not pluged un at. an with that whold alternator thing just call the auto parts store and ask them its actually better to go in and ask for two parts. ask for an alternator for a laser turbo and one for a non turbo. then see if its the same part# i dont know off hand someone elce may the the autoparts store could probabley answer your question really quickley.

Well did you check to make sure you're getting a good spark? Injectors spitting fuel?

Check'em. Read my help post... I need it.

Well i popped the charger on it today and its been running all day. it was low, and I am kinda thinking that it could have been the alternator dying out, or the batt has gone bad. the starter still makes a weird noise when i try to start the car,.... I checked at the parts store and they said that the lasers all carried the same starter,.. but the eclipses have different ones depending on if tis auto or manual. The one in the laser right now is one I took from my old 91 Eclipse N/A auto. so right now, I think I am going to put the lasers starter back in it and try it with a full battery charge. The weird thing is is that I didnt feel like the car was low on power at all. the windows, stereo, lights and belts all functioned fine without becoming slow or anything. I will check to see if there is something pulling constant power as well. anyone have other ideas?

So you put the starter from auto tranny to your manual????

Ya, the more that I think about that, The more I think it wasnt a good idea. I am going to switch them back tomarrow morning and check the batt and alt for problems. I also think it may be the coil pack, but ill just have to see. Anyone know what that connector is for?

That is the connector that you ground out when you want to time your car with a timing light. I don't know exactly what it is called but i know what it is for :)

The starter is way different from manual tranny and the auto tranny,i did the same thing 2 days ago,i bought the starter from my locqal junk yard (from automatic talon) put it in (my 1990 Eclipse gs turbo manual tranny) and it doesn't work,so i take it out, switch the starter solenoid and put my old one back in.After that my car starting again LOL)) :thumb:

Ya thats what it was, my starter. I had my local auto shop check it and the puck? wasnt engaging the starter anymore. so i got a new starter and now it all works fine again.

Odd, today it did it again. I took the starter back and it checked otu fine.Took it back to my car, popped it in, and it ran again.... The shop says it could be in the connections or in the power wire going to the starter. The volts all check out good. I wirebrushed the ends of all the connections to the batery just to make sure, and if it does it again im supposted to change the power wire to it. its still got the odd problem of starting and being really boggy and dying, but it dosnt happen often. anyone know what could cause that to happen?

is very possible that your ground is bad,and that plug in that picture is from the TB i think, couse there is no plugs behind the throttle body, just one from the TB,make shure your TB is connected

Sounds like the alternator to me - The battery is getting charged? If it's bogging down the alt. might not be charging the battery, and you could just be running off the battery.

I had the battery checked and its fine. My shop told me the alt is pushing correct voltage and charging the system. i did have my amp power for my sub hooked to my power terminal, and it was sitting on top of the starter conection, so I moved it to its own spot by itself, I dont know, car seems to work as of yet, If I encounter anymore problems I will let you all know.
