For some strange reason when my rpms get up to about 6,000 my headlights go out and come back on, kind of like a strobe light, my dash lights do the same. It does it both when im driving and when i just rev it. Any ideas of what is causing this problem would help?

You're losing voltage somewhere. Either that, or you are driaing all the voltage by the time you hit the 6k RPM mark. I'd check the battery terminals, the battery itself (could be lower then 12V output). I had this problem and it was a parasitic draw. Took over a week to find and I had to hook it up to an awfully expensive machine at my uncle's shop to even determine there was an electrical leak somewhere.

They make aftermarket voltage boosters. Now I wouldn't recommend going out and buying one, I was just including the fact that if or when it is fixed, perhaps you could use one to prevent this from happening in the future.

Get your alternator load tested (free at autozone/etc), new battery, check your grounds.

I started to explain how a bad ground could be the caus ebut then I realized I am not an electricain and cannopt simplify it. Sorry. But changing the Bat-alt-plugs- and getting a ground wiring kit(or make your own...there is a thread somewhere on how to do it), should fix your problem. Have the Alt checked as stated at a parts store, it free.

The slip ring brushes in the alternator are used-up. Combined with accumulated bearing wear and being over-driven by the crank, it's losing contact at high rpm. New alternator time.

i dont know about the brushes being gone. i used to work at RAYLOC and if you dont know anything about this company they rebuild alternators. while i worked there i toredown old alternators so they could get rebuild and i have never seen any brushes completely gone. but there might be a short in the rotor, stator, rectifier, or regulator. but i guess i should change the alternator being the car is 12 years old.

Just giving you a good ol heads up here. Alternators are NOT fun to change on our cars. So have plenty of beer at hand.

Actually changing the alt on our cars isn't that bad.
I just did this a couple weeks ago. You'll want a set of ramps, and a jack.

Use the ramps to get the car off the ground, get yourself comfortably underneath, unbolt the old one, and when its ready to come out you will find it doesnt fit!!!!

EASY solution, take a jack and give it a couple cranks to lift the car off the suspenion, the inch or two you get is enough to sneak the alt out from behind the axle.

I had a friend who worked at a mitsu dealer shop and when I told him I was able to change the alt without dropping the axle he about cried... apparently he's been doing it the hard way for years.

All in all, I think the alt only took about half an hour to do once I got the car on the ramps. Only took that long because one of the bolts was locked up pretty bad.

Goodluck with it!
