So what is that triangle piece anyway? I polished the upper heatshield and it looks nice IMO. Now the ugly part of that area is the triangle piece with that ring at the end.

What is it? Is it hard to take off? If it is easy, how do i do it?

My intentions are to polish it up also like i've done with the heatshield and the lettering if it is possible.

I'm not completely done polishing up the heatshield and lettering so please be nice about it not being as shiny as it will be.

Anyway, bottom line :

a) can i take it off easily?
b) is it something i can polish?
c) what the hell is it?

EDIT: notice i took this picture right about the time when i broke my dipstick :D gee, can u all guess what i was doing when i fell on the dipstick?

ok cool thx for the replies. Is the one bolt on the right the only one i'll need to remove?

I'm goin to put it back anyway once it is done being polished because the more shiny rice under the hood the better.

well, i guess it isn't techinically rice, since it was put there by the manufacturer and i'm just simply dressing it up.

Oh, I noticed some slight bronzing on parts of the heatshield after I drove the car around for a few days. Why did that happen? I am going to continue polishing tomorrow and would like to know what steps I can take so that when I'm done polishing, it wont bronze anymore.

there is one bolt to the right and it is also under two of the nuts used to attach the exhaust manifold. you will have to take off the heat shield and then remove all three bolts/nuts.

you can polish it up and put it back but it will rust again. seal it with something...

also, if you leave it off, people have reported timing covers melting and the like, so i would leave it there. maybe paint it with por20 if you don't plan to pull the engine (which would almost assuridly scratch the paint off in which case you can paint it again.

hmm i think i'll take it off, polish it, coat it with something, and put it back on.

I'd rather not have stuff melting because it is absent.

Although my concern with coating the heatshield and the triangle bracket is that it is right next to and directly connected to the exhaust manifold. Would using a high temp engine paint be enough? I know they can withstand temps of around 500 degrees, but the exhaust manifold is around three times that amount isnt it?

por 20 and their "factory manifold grey" claim "will withstand temperatures on a continuing basis up to 1400°F"

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141140&highlight=aluminum+paint

there is some good info here explaining that 1200 degree is enough because the 1600 degree EGT is inside the manifold and MANY people have had no problems with 1200 degree paint (some people have had problems on the manifold but i bet the lift hook will be fine, worst that happens is it burns off)

one half pint is 26 bucks but can probably do everything in your engine bay you want and then have enough to do it again. (i don't know this first hand but ive heard great things about the coverage. search the board for por 20)

a few other alternatives

a lot cheaper you can easily do your manifold and the hook with one can for 8 bucks

if you think you really need the 2000 degree protection
