I have looked a a few of the other tech articles and can't seem to find the answer, maybe I'm just not looking hard enough... I have two 1992 Eagle Talon TSI AWD's. One has the turbo and the other doesn't (someone bought it befor I bought the car). I was wondering if I could just put a regular non turbo manifold on the block and run it without a turbo. I don't really have the cash to buy another turbo set up. I am not going to be driving the car, my sister is. She is only going to be using it to drive 10-15 minutes to work. So if anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it.

No, the car will run super rich! You can find a used 14b for around $150-$200! There's alot more then just putting a n/t manifold on.

It will be OK as long as you block the oil and water lines that are going to the turbo.

the car will run rich. if the engine internals are stock it wont have much power either because of the low compression. the flange on the exhaust is also different for the nt manifold vs. the turbo housing. id just pick up a stock turbo.

by the time you change the ecu, block off oil and water lines, modify the exhaust to bolt up to the nt manifold, change the intake piping, ect. it might just end up being less hassle to spend the money and buy a stock turbo. you can find them used for a decent price.

He already has all the non-turbo stuff on the NT car. The ECU doesn't run rich when you're off boost in the turbo car, so it doesn't make sense that it would run rich while off boost in the NT car. Even if he does, still has NT injectors, ECU, MAF, manifold, and exhaust pipe already on the NT car.

It is easier to swap out turbos. But if you are flat broke, you may not have another choice, and you can sell the turbo stuff for much more than the NT stuff.

Why do you guys think that taking off the turbo will make him run super rich? This makes NO sense AT ALL. Do you not understand how the ECU works? The maps go by airflow and rpm, and getting rid of the turbo will LOWER airflow, so the ECU will obviously be putting in considerably less fuel. Since you will never be in boost, you won't be hitting the super-rich parts of the fuel map anyways. It would take a bit of work getting the exhaust to work and plugging the turbo oil and coolant lines. I would suggest finding a 14B, you should be able to find one for 100-150 bucks if not cheaper.

Also, he would have to switch the MAS if he installed the non-turbo ECU, injectors, and FPR in the car, and the MAS for a turbo and non-turbo have different plugins -- definitely not a good idea to start hacking up the wiring. I also don't know if it would work OK for the injectors or not, since the turbo car has the resistor box for the low impedance injectors unlike the non-turbo with the high impedance injectors.

If you absolutely have to, go ahead and do the work of eliminating the turbo for now; it won't be the best setup and will be even slower than a non-turbo because of the low compression and the higher weight of the car, but I see no reason it wouldn't work.

The exhaust will need fabrication, obviously to bolt up, but the manifold will bolt up just fine to the engine.

Find a 14b and run that. Check your local dsm forum, post a wanted to buy ad if you can there. A local guy was/is selling a bunch of 14bs for $60 a piece.
