420a turbo

I'm new to the whole turbo thing and am wondering if anyone would how this Godspeed T3 48AR Quick Spool Universal Turbo Charger Free Shipping | eBay would work on a DD? It's a 96 RS with the 420a. I'm not necessarily getting this turbo, just using it as a size example since I'm having alittle trouble wrapping my brain around how turbo sizing and all that works and am just trying to get an idea. I'm from rural Texas so my normal driving speed is anywhere from 70-80 mph. Is this going to build boost to soon for me or not? Anyway any input would be welcomed an thanks in advance.
 
That brand of turbo I would not recommend. It would spool fairly fast probably around 3k rpm. How many miles are on the engine? You have to do complete matinence on the car before installing a turbo on a bone stock 420a. What would be your goal with this car and what kind of budget are you thinking about?
 
There's a lot to think about, but the most important this is matenence.. You just can jump in and run high boost on stock internals.. What are your goals?
 
Steer clear of a turbo sold by an eBay vendor. Buy a quality turbo made by a reputable business.

But like stated. You need to do a complete overhaul on the motor.
- Timing Belt Kit
- Plugs and Wires
- All new fluids
- Compression Test (this will tell you a lot about your motor)
- You'll need a fuel pump and injectors
- Something to tune with
- Air/Fuel Gauge, Boost, Oil pressure, etc.
 
I bought the car with 194,000 miles on it with a broken timing belt. I changed that and ran it for around 2000 miles but it was leaking oil down the back of the block so I changed the head gasket and got the valves checked while I had it apart. There acouple of slightly bent ones, I don't remember how many it was but I replaced them and have been running it ever since and have 203,000 miles by now, although there's still an oil leak from the headgasket which is ticking me off, so I picked up a set of ARP studs off of ebay for $80 and a new head gasket last week. Haven't had the time to tear into it yet but hopefully in a week or so I'll get to that.

I've read up on turbo'ing these engines a good bit. I know the 8 psi limit on stock internals and for now I'm gonna stick with that but who know's how long that will last because I'll probably need a rebuild before to long with that amount of miles. When that happens I'll get the forged rods and pistons an all that but I'm sticking with stock till then.

I'm hoping for around 175-200 hp for now. I'm just wanting an idea of what turbo I'll need so as to not be constantly under boost while just cruising.

In my opinion, if you have the means, id just go ahead and do a complete rebuild on the entire motor.

Here's my thought, and you can take this as you may.

The bottom end already has a ton of miles on it. You replaced some valves and the head gasket already. I'm assuming when you bought the car with the broken belt, that's what caused the valves to bend, and probably other problems. It also seems like you have an oil leak issue, and seeing as how oil is the blood in any engine, that's something you want to take care of before you think about adding boost.

So if you have the means and the time to do it, id pull out the 420a, do a nice rebuild, and freshen her all up. Then once you've got the new fresh motor all broken in and all the little things are fixed, you can take on the turbo application knowing you have a healthy engine to deal with.

Just my .02.

Either way, before you go for your 175-200whp goal, you really need to make sure the motor is all good. I'd hate to see you throw a turbo kit on and 200-500 miles later blow the motor.
 
Ok thanks for the advice, I'll think on it before I do anything. It will be a month or two at least before I'll do anything either way anyhow.

So after I would do the rebuild what would be a good turbo choice for me?
 
Ok so to show my ignorance here, could anybody either explain or point me to an article that explains how the different sizing works on turbo's. I'm seeing all kinds of term's like 16g, 14b, t25, t28, an etc. Along with different trims an A/R's and I'll have to admit I'm confused :confused:
 
Yeah I've been trying that the last couple of days. Haven't found anything that clicks with me yet unfortunately.

If you do rebuild it make sure you dont forget the waterpump because the way the motor is you got to pretty much take apart the who side of the motor to get to it and the timing cover is one piece which sucks. My first turbo build was a 420a and it was only 93k fully rebuilt and kept giving me problems. I say go for it but Ialso say getting a 4g63 would be good too because you would be stock with 210 :)

If you do rebuild it make sure you dont forget the waterpump because the way the motor is you got to pretty much take apart the who side of the motor to get to it and the timing cover is one piece which sucks. My first turbo build was a 420a and it was only 93k fully rebuilt and kept giving me problems. I say go for it but Ialso say getting a 4g63 would be good too because you would be stock with 210 :)

I changed the water pump along with the timing belt back when I first got it. If I could have found a 4g63 for $680 like I did this one I would have, but now that I have the 420a I'm sticking with it. There's just something cool about taking something slow that people love to hate on an making it fast. :)
