I have a 95 eclipse that I blew the motor in. Everyone I have talked to said to replace it with a 99 model 420. So I located one and trying to do research on this swap. Am I going to run into any obd issues? What steps to I have to take in order to get my car running again?

All 2gnt will bolt in, the difference will be when you use a motor from 97-99 on a 95 car (like me ) the location of some sensors will be different. So, you will need to use your engine to swap parts. Mostly sensors, fuel rail, thermostate sensors, etc.(you will see) But you can get it out of your old motor.

Good luck and if you have more questions PM me.

Cool Appreciate it guys! I blew it racing, Over revved bigtime.....And yes the motor is a 99....so I'll have to swap some sensors and things right?

either swap sensors or get a 99 ecu...

edit: actually, you will need a 99 ecu because the 95 is OBD1 and the 99 is OBD2. Then you will have to rewire your ECU harness to plug into the new ECU. If I were you, Id just find a 95 motor.

Say what? I swapped an OBD1 95 block into my 97 with absolutely no problems whatsoever. At best, you might have a couple connectors to change. AT BEST. The only difference between your block and that 99 is your main bearings are notched differently.

EDIT:
Whoever told you you needed a 99 block is a ####tard. You want any 420a without a window in it. You have to machine it down anyways. Pfft. Like the 99 makes more horsepower or something. Some people = morons.

no i think the 99's do make more power and are superior in everyway :p

i think the 99 is less prone to things like the head gasket problem than the other years.

LOL!

Superior in that, one head bolt hole might have been tapped all the way to the bottom? If you cut that bolt down .125" and use the MLS HG, there is no HG issue.

When will the madness end?

MLS was NEVER introduced on ANY 2gnt's. Not 95, not 99 nor anything in between. The MLS was introduced midway through the 98 production year on the chrysler 2.0L and 2.4L's in the cloud cars, neons, and minivans. In 99 ALL chrysler 4 cylinder engines EXCEPT the ones found in the talon, sebring coupe, avenger, and eclipse recieved the MLS headgasket and most engines coming off the line to this day are also using MLS.

You shouldn't put the 99 computer in to a 95 car BECAUSE:
1. you' ll always have a check engine light due to numerous missing emissions components
2. The 99 ECU uses 2 40 pin connectors where as the 95 using a single 60 pin connector
3. Why re-wire everything when you already have a car with fewer emissions components?
4. Show us some stats on the 95 vs the 99 420A and then we'll discuss it more. Until then... they're all the same. The correct arguement to get involved with is weight changes.
Thanks,
Doug

I just swapped and entire 95 long-block into my 97 Eclipse, and had to change NOTHING with regards to wiring and ECU. The only thing that I had to do was remove the sensors from the old engine and put them on the new engine.

Nothing to worry about. Good luck!

I didn't even do that. I reused my own 97 sensors on my 95 block. After all, I have a 97 ECU with 97 wiring harness...

Not trying to ruffle any feathers here Mr DSMtoonerz wiseman, but I almost felt guilty in what I posted after seeing you jump in and "clear things up." Then I realized:

A) No one in this thread made mention of MLS being "introduced." I stated that replacing the OEM with a MLS was so simple that talking headgasket issues between years was stupid. GS stated his opinion on whether the 99 was less prone to issues. Might be referencing DCX actually drilling tapping that one hole all the way. If they ever did get that issue fixed, who knows.

B) Maybe you didn't notice, but this thread is NOT about using a 99 ECU in a 95 it's about how this kid has someone telling him he wants to get a 99 BLOCK for some magical reason. I will certainly concede that going to the trouble to convert to a 99 OBD2 set up would be retarded and I do see it mentioned in this thread, but everyone sort of skipped over that part as it was a dumb idea.

Share this weight difference you speak of. Is it merely the overall weight of the car is reduced due to less emissions equipment? Or is the block itself somehow cast from a "lighter" iron? I'm genuinely curious.

Thank you.

EDIT:
Chrysler Mechanic, eh? Maybe I'm about to get broke off here, but I call 'em as I see 'em, and have long since given up caring what others think on the internet. No intentions of starting a pissing match or anything.

"Not trying to start anything" but you refer to this site as "Tooners", it's quite clear the sarcasm in your voice when most people on here at least give me SOME respect for trying to provide valuable information. Then you act like there's something wrong with the information I've provided because I'm a chrysler mechanic. I really don't see how you think I'm NOT going to take offense to any of that.

Why not just come right out and say it and stop ####y-footing around. You didn't like the way I responded, you think I was coming off as an arrogant ass, and you don't put any value in the information I provided here or anywhere else on this site as any GOOD wiseman should??? Let's not be misleading here to the veiwing audience.

My responses were to these questions and comments:

"I think the 99 is less prone to things like the head gasket problem than the other years."
Response: No one mentioned the MLS BUT it should have been mentioned just as soon as a comment like this was made. Not being condisending towards the author of it but it should have been mentioned that there were no headgasket changes made from the factory. I added information where it was clearly lacking. I'm sorry that you felt the need that I continue to leave out relavent information to the topic at hand.

Q. Am I going to run into any obd issues?
A. 1. you' ll always have a check engine light due to numerous missing emissions components
2. The 99 ECU uses 2 40 pin connectors where as the 95 using a single 60 pin connector
3. Why re-wire everything when you already have a car with fewer emissions components?

Comment:
"either swap sensors or get a 99 ecu..."

Response:
Again, see above

Comment:
4. Show us some stats on the 95 vs the 99 420A and then we'll discuss it more. Until then... they're all the same. The correct arguement to get involved with is weight changes.

What I should have said was maybe the discussion in horsepower differences should address weight differences between Coupe, RS, and GS models from year model to year model. THEN we could debate a relevant topic since, like you, I don't feel there is any horsepower/torque difference between year models.

What I forgot to point out was:
"Say what? I swapped an OBD1 95 block into my 97 with absolutely no problems whatsoever. "
Bullshit. The 95 is not OBDI, it is OBDII without all of the emissions standards of the OBDII full system. If you don't beleive me, describe the connectors under the left of the dash panel by the steering wheel between the 95 and 96 year models. How many OBDI scanners have you ever hooked up to your 2gnt???

SO... If you don't feel as though I have been beneficial to you, this thread and it's readers, as well as the entire DSM community feel free to talk to Ludachris. I'm sure he'll be willing to ask me to leave since you've been so much more beneficial to the world than I.
Again, Thanks,
Doug

True this.my 95 has both of the connectors.but when i try to connect with my friends genysis on the obd -I it doersn't want to comunicate.but in just pop in the obd-II scanner on the obd II connector and wualla connected.

And yes whoever told you you need a 99' motor is a retard(mechanicly challenged or misinformed) ;) .try to find one closer to your year IMO.

well doug i understand u may be a chrysler mechanic but i have to disagree on the 99's not having the head gasket problem, im currently replacing mine at 60,000. thats unacceptable to me. this may be a bad apple in the bunch but im putting my odds on not hardly. and for the swap why not get the diagrams and compare and go from there?

I think you may have mis-read what I wrote. I re-read it and might see the mistake. Here's it in a different manor.
All Factory Eclipse, Talon, Sebring Coupe, Avenger 2.0L headgaskets on the 420A sucked and were proned to fail by leaking oil from the driver's side rear passage. This is due to the oil restrictor area of the headgasket failing and the headgasket over-all being dookie. The MLS headgasket was introduced as a replacement part but not put on the car from the factory. Sorry for any confusion. :thumb:
