Hey all,

My '99 Eclipse GS's 420a engine seems to be hotter than other cars (i.e. mom's '00 Maxima GXE), is this just a characteristic of our car or is something wrong w/my engine? Also, I'm idling at 1300 rpm in Park, shouldn't it be a lot lower? (previous owner put custom gauge faces and screwed up speedometer [8 mph faster than actual speed], maybe they screwed up the tachometer too?)

Thanks! :dsm:

Before i pulled the motor out of my 95 eclipse rs the 420a was ideling about 1,200 to 1,300. But now it idles at 900 and it wont stay at a constant idle :thumbdown but o well i gotta pull the motor back out anyways because the crank has gone bad once again . But your 420a isnt idleing high.

Isn't Idling high??? Um, that's quite high actually. Target idle on the 420A is closer to 750-800 RPM. You probably have a vacuum line off, a hole in the speed control resevior (if equipped), a leaking intake gasket, or a throttle cable that is too tight pulling the throttle plate open. Do you have a check engine light or just high idle?
Doug
P.S. Just noted the guage issue. Only way to be able to tell what your engine speed now is to hook up a scan tool of some sort and see what the computer says it's running at. Then you can compare that to gauges.

:( What kind of scan tool will do the job? Pocketlogger? Or should I just take the car to Satan (dealership) for a full checkup?

ive been told by my buddies that work on the 4g's that my motor is like really f'n hot, and they are also suprised on how fast it gets that way as well :thumb: so i would say u r fine as far as that goes..... the other stuff, yah the idel sounds high... but cant know for sure because the gages could be off, if your not getting a cell i wouldent worrie about it to much :thumb:

may sound simple but does it sound like its idleing high... well i guess if thats all you have heard then thats what your used to, but when mine idles high occasionally i can hear it.

doug.. is that idle for manuals or automatics or both? my manual idles at like 775-900

Did it ever occur to you that someone who works for a dealership is currently trying to help you fix your problem right now? That we're not all "Satan" and actually do earn every bit penny that we charge? Go fix it yourself. I'll take my knowledge and help somewhere else.
